Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

I think it will be a choice of what they want to do to end the characters story arcs more than anything else and how they want to weave them into the SW universe in both future productions and the past.
Watching the start of "A New Hope" its pretty obvious that the rebels get the data on the Death Star transmiited off Scarif during the battle to end up on the Blockade Runner which then jumps into hyperspace pursued by Darth Vader. So thats essentially the direct link to the openning of SW that ends it so quickly before ANH. You do see that shot of Jyn high upon a tower when the Tie fighter suddenly appears so I am guessing thats part of the climax.
But there are so many things they can do with the story it will drive you slightly mad even trying to work it all out.I've got about half a dozen different versions. Do they go full darkside and kill everybody off,or will they let a very few survive , or does the victory enable the bulk of people to go on to have further adventures in the immediate period afterward but not directly linked to the Skywalker story. They are after all, a "Rogue unit" operating independantly.
When you go back and watch ANH its pretty much a classic pursuit and mission movie as well and everything actually happens over a very brief period of time, barely a couple of days. Its really only past this point it becomes the branching saga of the Skywalker family in the OT and into TFA.
So I think "Rogue One" will essentially be almost be like the first half of a two part movie , its grittier twin in the two part story of the 1st Death Star. Like I have said before in the thread, my heart leapt when I heard they were doing this because in the forty odd years since ANH I've come up with so many different versions of this, none, I have to say, that look as promising as this does.
I do hope that given Jyns kind of black market/criminal /family background there is enough wriggle room left that by the end of it , RO could possibly be another trilogy developing during the same OT time scale allowing Jyns story to broaden further into the SW universe (mainly because I love that period) and its a huge one at that. I am hoping that the "reshoots" reflected that and that some things were changed with hindsight as the story group refined their ideas.
Ultimately much will depend on how well this performs at the BO. Remember these films have been produced in a very short time frame, I mean who the hell would have guessed we would be getting a SW film every Xmas!!!!!!

Wow - you are literally going insane thinking about this stuff, aren't you? :lol

I kid, of course. It looks pretty cool so far, and I've wanted to see this since I was a kid, too.
(Of course, I also said that about the prequels...)

Yeah, just a bit!!!!! The thing with RO is that they have managed to keep the bulk of the story hidden, the broad strokes are there, we've seen enough in the trailer to keep us interested without blowing the whole of it and not much has really leaked. The same can be said for EpVIII, they've done an even better job of it , RO has kept people distracted and THAT story is anybodies to guess at the moment!!!!
I've always enjoyed speculating on stories, sometimes its damn close, sometimes it hugely beats my expectations and other times (prequels) I've been left fairly flat with disappointment. BUT over the last few years the overall standard of films generally has risen, particularly sci fi and fantasy when they let people who are fans of them get involved. And Garth Edwards seems to be most definitely a fan and a half so on that score I'm not worried. Not long now until we see anyway.

That's because the broad strokes of the story (once upon a time there were Clone Wars and Jedi Knights, then bad stuff happened, then the Empire built a Death Star, then the Rebels found out about it, there was a battle in which the Rebels won their first victory and stole the plans to the Death Star, and they got to Princess Leia, who took off with the Empire on her heels) have been known since 1977. They can give away that much of the movie without giving away any of the movie, so to speak. So the trailers have stuck pretty close to those beats and only teased at the other stuff that will flesh out the context of it all. Fun times. :)

Has anyone else seen this yet? At my local grocery store they had these shirts which look to me like Boba Fett concept art and which are being sold as part of the Rogue One pre-release merchandise. Thoughts?

there is a new product commercial with kids and I think it has some major spoilers to the movie.

don't watch much TV, so, I only seen the commercial once and not sure what it was for. Not sure if you guys seen it, or what I'm talking about or whatever

I have, no spoilers. That was all just made up for the commercial.

Cool visuals in the commercial, but these product tie-ins are just pure lame. It was the same crap when TFA was released. It's like they strain to find the most tenuous element with which a completely unrelated product can somehow be linked to the movie, and then they produce an absurd commercial that really has nothing to do with the product or the film. Looks pretty. It's just really dumb.

Uncle George seems to handle marketing way better than Disney. I can't believe anyone is actually more whorish than lucas!

Wait! I'm confused! In Episode 2 the Death Star is secretly under development by Count Dooku and Separatists. and by end of Episode 3 the Death Star is already under construction...

The one scene in the trailer when Krennic and his troopers were picking up Jyn's father, was that during or after Clone Wars? If it's during Clone Wars i'd be very confused because Krennic already wearing imperial uniform and along with Imperial troops when the Republic and clonetroopers are still around?

Can anyone explain this

She was born during the Clone Wars as Catalyst has her as an infant in it. if she was 8 years old as the shots seem to imply, it's at least 5 years after the Clone Wars end in those shots. As Krennic has the 6 point Imperial Logo on his hat.

Also there's this...

Ok sure, you need to be nice clean shaven and smelling good before attacking the Empire.
Did his mom lay out a clean pair of underroos on his bed at home?
Sometimes these tie ins.....

This is KK comment:

"You know, we're in the midst of talking about it, but I don't think these films will have an opening crawl," Kennedy said of the possibility that Rogue One would include the familiar Star Wars trope. "I think that's what we kind of telegraphed at the beginning of the event today."
