Rising Sun hoverboard help needed

Hi Guys

I've had a few people asking about the Rising Sun hoverboard, so i'm going to start looking into making this. The board will be cnc from plastic as my Marty board is, what i need help with is the dimensions and layout of the board, does anyone know what the dimensions are? at a guess i'd say its about the same length as Marty's hoverboard (28 inches) but does anyone know for sure what it actually is? any diagrams anywhere? i have a good photo of one of the bttf the ride rising sun hoverboards that i could use, but are they accurate in dimensions?

Also, should the sides be rounded or flat? should the sides be painted red, white or half white, half red?

white flat sides

Thanks in advance

I'd assume the magnets and battery box are the same size as the ones on the mattel board and scale from there.

Email sent. :)

I personally think the Red/White sides look the best. It seems a bit more "in-tune" with the rest of the design.

As for the side shape, the one at Universal Studios Hollywood has flat sides and so does the one in your screencap. However, I think the rounded corners would probably look better.

Whichever is accurate to a "Hero" designation is what I'd choose.

got them thanks :)

from that board it looks like it was painted all red then white vinyl graphics were applied (and the edges painted white). agreed the rounded two tone edges look better :thumbsup it would be easier for the two tone edges to do one side painted white with red vinyl graphics and the other side painted red with white vinyl graphics, if thats ok by everyone thats how i'll plan to do it, it'll mean there wont be a point where the white vinyl meets white painted part and same for the red (just incase there's a slight colour difference between the vinyl and paint)

just need to nail the length of it now and i can get to work on making a prototype

First of all thank you Razorsharp for your decision that you give the RISING SUN hoverboard a chance.

Today I've watched BTTF II again and I took some screencaps (sorry for the lousy quality. I still don't have the Blu-Ray version :confused)

My question is now how screen accurate the screenused.com pics are, because of the differences to my screencaps?
I don't see rounded edges there. In my opinion the sides are flat and one colored (red). The top side has a small white border around the edge. But the bottom side haven't this equivalent small red border. The white "sunbeams" are going straight to the edge without this red border around the bottom side.

Could it be that these screenused.com pics are wrong? Or is the reason for the mismatch that they've made different boards?

Here's one from Propstore.com's collection:

"The final Hoverboard was the "Rising Sun". The board in our collection is wood but sadly missing its foot pad. The distinctive Japanese style sun pattern in vinyl applied and coated. It is in fine condition and is perhaps the most attractive of the five boards seen in Back to the Future Part II"

i would assume its the difference between the stunt and hero boards (either flat one colour or rounded two tone edges), although from the screen shots it does seem like the only board seen on screen is the stunt board. going by what the quote is from prop store the whole graphic is vinyl then. imo the rounded two tone edges look nicer, but if thats not screen accurate then it'll have to be the flat one colour edges

I think the best bet will be the flat edges. It's what seems to be featured most prominently in the film.

The board I visited actually was spray painted I believe.

I think that the prop store is saying the red sun is the vinyl part. If you look closely at the edges of the sun rays towards the back of the board, you can see they are starting to lift up ever so slightly....

ok so is the general thinking that the board should have flat sides and be painted red?

just had a look at these pics on ketzer:

desi_jap_top.jpg

notice on this one how the white on the board is a slightly different shade of white to the edge?

also the same can be seen on this pic for the red, the red on the board is slightly darker than the edges (once you notice this, see how it follows the lines of the white parts exactly around the board?)

the red on the board is every so slightly a different shade and follows the line of the white parts perfectly, which suggests the whole top and bottom designs were printed vinyl and just the edges were painted. its pretty clear to see from these pics that the bottom and top graphics were fully printed, and just the edges painted.

Maybe you could contact someone who owns one of these boards and ask them for the dimensions...whether you get results or not is anyone's best guess.

Could it be that the color has faded on the top due to sun exposure?

Maybe some different fabric/vinyl or material than the other one which discolored differently, just think of these old Krups grinders, vintage Apple Macs and other whitisch plastic exposed to the sun turned vanilla or yellow.

A couple months late to the party here, but I grabbed a few HD screencaps.
You can see that the board switches to the rounded type with two-tone color on the edges a few times.

It's the rounded white/red type when he lifts it out of the car, but then the flat sides when he's seen carrying it. It's also seen again as the CGI version, and the version he gets on for the water scene.
