RIP Charles Durning

Know for O Brother, Where Art Thou, The Muppet Movie, The Sting, "NCIS," "Family Guy" and lots more.

His best role, though was an infantryman in Europe during WW2, where he took part in the Normandy landing and the Battle of the Bulge, and for which he earned a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts.

RIP sir.

Loved him in O Brother and in The Last Supper. A really great character actor.

I loved him in Mel Brooks' "To Be or not To Be" and as Tommy Gavin's father in "Rescue Me."

Loved him the the NCIS episode Call of Silence. Very powerful performance.

Charles Durning is one of those great character actors whose excellent performances in films like Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, The Sting, Best Little Whorehore in Texas, Dog Day Afternoon, and many other films are thankfully preserved for posterity.

Great character actor. Met him once when he was in town filming for an episode of Homicide Life On The Street. Great, warm, friendly man.

I was listening to a podcast and they mentioned Charles Durning not only survived storming the beached of Normandy, but also got stabbed by a Nazi with a bayonet but managed to overcome him by smashing his head with a rock and killing him.

Tried to find out more, but everything is just small anecdotes.
