Resident Evil Retribution: umbrella troopers grenade

Hello,

recently there was a big prop & costumes auction of the latest Resident Evil movies so I decided to expand my game prop collection by adding some elements from the movie.

The grenade prop from the fifth movie caught my attention as it has a nice futurist design and offers the chance to include a micro controller for the led bar.

Moreover, Taku Dazai portfolio images offers very detailed references, so doing a precise copy without direct access to the movie prop should be a piece of cake.

For my replica I decided, to make a CAD model and to produce it with 3d Printing, as fabricating it with a CNC mill, like they did, is out of my budget.

Here is my first model version.

I already made a first revision, by comparing my drawing with the reference one I found some errors in the safety level.

Next step was deciding the internal hardware. I decided to use an Arduino Mini with a Li-Po battery. It's my first time in using a controller board to drive a few leds (the prop has a 10 led segment bar) so I am not 100% sure if this design choice is correct. I used the CAD to plan the internal components layout before printing it and I verified that everything can fit inside easily.

I am waiting for the electronic components shipping from China, so my build will be paused for a few weeks.

Last step I will do in the next days is to rework the CAD model an split it in separate parts and add internal supports for the internal components.

I prefer to split 3D prints in separate parts when it is functional to internal parts assembly and for surface polishing.

hi,

you have good choices ! so weird that it's the only thread about this lovely designed grenade. i liked it much in the previous movie, when she had a belt of these nades. do you plan sharing a 3D file to print it ? we are perhaps very few to like it, but yes personnally i like it too !!

Hi, thank you for your support. It seems that Resident Evil movies don't raise very much interest in the costume/prop makers community.

I am sorry, usually I don't share my 3d files (they are either done by me or commissioned). I upload them on my shapeways shop and sell the prints with a reasonable kickback, that way I can finance a little my prop making.

I finished the design of the grenade parts. This video nicely illustrates all the separate parts I disassembled the prop and how they will fit together.

Am I too late to the thread? I LOVE this prop too! So much so I bought a screen used nade. Can’t believe I own one of 6!
