Resculpting a GH ANH Darth Vader mask (Pic heavy)

Mac, I've been an admirer of your sculpts for a while now and I think that you've really done an amazing job with Quasi. You should be very proud of your work here. I know I would be proud to own one. As much as I love having straight pulls, and unaltered casts in my collection. Fan sculpts like this really have a special place because you can see and appreciate all the blood and sweat that went into getting something just right. Bravo

Yeah, I've often heard that the workmanship on these castings were really good. Very good and sturdy castings. Your work certainly worked well in reverse engineering it back towards a closer accuracy.

Thanks, guys! The community support towards fan-sculpts really means a lot to me.

Here is a progress shot where I've worked on in which I've dremeled out the teeth holes to begin work on the teeth bars, and have modified the neck and the right tusk tube tip. Still a work in progress, folks!

Just stumbled across this thread...GREAT WORK. Keep the progress pics coming.

I'd definitely be interested in a cast of this if/when you make them available.

Love it :thumbsup

It's an interesting re-interpretation that's for sure. While it has been brought closer to more accurate look, it still has inherent some of the classic GH features. Most interesting.

This is really helpfull ,
Ive just purchased a crapy (rubies recast) made from FG and I plan do do it up to a plausable Vader , Ive quite alot of sculpting experiance , and have made passable Fett helmets up from the ground (not to mention many many non prop related sculpts) so I fell that my mission to make my vader believable not to far beyond belief ,
So thank you in advance for your work as it will aid mine (alot)

Oh and sorry for to necro

Here is an update. A lot of my work involves these large story arcs where I might develop a helmet for one mask - but then it looks better for another mask altogether. I might swap them back and forth and develop them in parallel.

I had a very wrecked-looking DPCA-based dome dubbed "the Straw Hat" which required a ridiculous amount of restoration before it could become a candidate for an ANH adaptation. If you're interested in its origins and progress thread, visit: The Prop Den • Login

So the shots below are of the new dome. In turn, I gave this dome back to my other project, "Goldie", which is another near-final project.

And now... here is Quasimodo with its new dome!

The above shows Quasimodo's new dome with a newly sculpted mid strip, the "Y" shaped crease, among various tweaks and resculpts of details that are non-existent on the original Don Post Classic Action. It may be harder to see here from this perspective, but it also has a new fold line around the domecap base. The flange has been given an ANH treatment as well.

When painted, there will be some subtle textural characteristics that will lend to more of an on-set movie look (as I love that beat-up war-worn look from ANH!)

Please pardon the fact there's no mounting system there, so the helmet is sitting a bit lower than the norm. I was using a tube sock and it's in the laundry hamper! :)

And my favorite shot:

So, that's pretty much it now. This is nearly done. The smaller teeth holes need a bit of sanding and refining, and there are some minor tidbits I have to address, but this is almost good to go to molding! :thumbsup

Freaking sweet!!! Man I want to attempt a Vader build myself but it looks like a daunting task.

Again would love to see this cast up, fantastic work Mac :)

This is a fantastic thread!! Thanks for keeping us updated on the process, and let us know if you'll be offering castings.

Yes, I will be offering castings. But first, Quasi has to be molded, and a few test pulls be made for paint testing....

Keep in touch if you're interested. For all the work that's gone into this, I would probably be selective and particular of who gets to own Quasi. I see too many fellow sculptors' stuff wind up recast on eBay cast cheaply in white polyurethane. In one case, I verified one recaster as a popular RPF regular, so forum post count is not an indicator of whether someone will honor or violate an agreement.

Those who feel they need to recast because they can't afford an artist's work, don't worry - I will have an economical alternative that will stand its own next to an SPFX or JB.

Ultimately, I'm raising money to help a disabled woman who occasionally needs treatments at the Mayo Clinic for skin cancer or some other unbelievable ailment. Any recasting in this case would take away from this woman we're trying to help, so recasters please be aware of the harm you would be doing to a person's life.

Great attention to detail mac. I doubt I would have had the attention span to stick with something like this for as long as you have. Its come a long way, and your efforts show. Awesome work.:)

Mac, definitely interested in getting a casting. Good call on being selective, the recasting stuff is definitely out of control. I'd be interested in whatever you offer; my stomtrooper and Fett are just lonely with a Vader!!!

Great efforts, great infos, and great result and for a great cause! :)(y)thumbsup
I'm happy to see all of it,and would be very excited to see when its cast and painted:)

This has been a amazing journey to watch your progress on this resculpt. Excellent work and very much looking forward to seeing a painted up cast of it. It would be nice to be able to own a copy of this helmet that out does a SPFX & JB. Maybe one day I will be lucky enough to own a helmet of such beauty. Thanks for sharing your journey with us all.
