Red Dwarf Papercraft (Pep) props

Re: Red Dwarf Kryten head - Can anyone unfold this 3D .obj model in Pepakura?

Nothing I do will open this! What program do I need?

Re: Red Dwarf Kryten head - Can anyone unfold this 3D .obj model in Pepakura?

To open which file do you mean ?
if its .obj several programs will open it
if you mean the PDO you need pepakura viewer
I will be posting PDO`s/ PDF`s with in the next few days just testbuilding it to see if everything works right :)

As for reference material for kryten suit and the bazookoid im working on getting what i can
Wish i took better photos when i saw a Kryten suit at a museum i went to (just some guy who owns a cafe with a huge basement and collects loads of props mainly doctor who but some other stuff info here if anyone wanted to go )

Gaaa!!!

Invalid Url!!

Really wanted a nosey of that guys basement too.. LOL

When was Kryters suit at a Museum????

Re: Red Dwarf Kryten head - Can anyone unfold this 3D .obj model in Pepakura?

So I've put together something resembling a Bazookoid , though as I mentioned before it is bound to be quite innaccurate. Hopefully it'll do.

The zip contains 3 .obj files. One is for the main body, and there are two files to choose from for the barrel, a high and slightly lower resolution version. The lower resolution version strips out some smaller detail that is probably easier to make afterwards.

Also please excuse the messyness of the meshes in places :p It only occurs on planar surfaces, so I think the model should still be fine for pepakura.

@paperjon: Thanks for that extra reference. Looking forward to your unfolds :)

@NakedMoleRat: If you're talking about the .obj files, I use BLENDER.

As paperjon said, for viewing .pdo files you need Pepakura viewer. You can get that HERE

Re: Red Dwarf Kryten head - Can anyone unfold this 3D .obj model in Pepakura?

@Jixton heres that link again sorry cant believe i messed up with copy and paste lol bare in mind theres not really any photos at that link just reviews and address etc but well worth going there i will probably go again soon um think it was about this time last year i saw kryten there but just had a look at photos and it was the gold suit :( but its pretty much just a recolour of the season 8 suit so wrong one but it will still be there as he owns it and he thinks its awesome
@DetachableToe your welcome and thankyou i will have a look at those bazookoids later working hard on kryten right now

Re: Red Dwarf Kryten head - Can anyone unfold this 3D .obj model in Pepakura?

Great photo's there, HMS...

It's a shame the American Red Dwarf didn't take off....but from what I'd seen from the very poor pilot episode knocking around...I don't feel it was cast very well, and lacked in original content.

It felt like watching a poorly acted routine of qoutes from the UK series...

Which was a massive shame, as it could have had great potential..

I digress, so Back to topic.....

The suit you linked too, looks very much like the series 4-5 suit...which I reckon would be the best to go for. There are, of course, noticable differences. But it's the closest referance image we have to date.

Thanks for linking too it!

Re: Red Dwarf Kryten head - Can anyone unfold this 3D .obj model in Pepakura?

@DetachableToe bazookoid looks awesome i prefer the low res but thats just because im thinking of papercraft lol the kryten head will be finished some point tommorow sorry for delay not had much time for the testbuilding but its looking great so far
anyway again sorry for the delay on this but heres kryten reference pics 27 different images from series 4 and 5 lots of different angles etc
reference images
@HMS Mike i agree with Jixton it could have been great but they got it so wrong
@Howlrunner any chance you can rename your thread to red dwarf papercraft props or something like that
@Jixton did you check out the info on that museum?

Thread renamed. :)

How's the Kryten head look for size Paperjon? I printed off the pep file on paper just to see the parts properly and it looks like it will be a little under life-size.

cool
@Howlrunner the unfold i have done is a little bigger than life size going to size it down before i share it tomorrow it is a later edit from DetachableToe than the one Dung0beetle unfolded i will be sharing a white lined version a lined textured version and a lineless texture version PDO`s and PDF`s tomorrow along with a picture of my fiacee`s build

Awesome!!

@Paperjon, yeah, I did check the link. And you're right...not much in the way of pictures. I wonder if the Rengade dalek he has is a BBC original, or a TPE reproduction?, as it appears to have the foam top shoulder collar, instead of the usual shoulder mesh.

Quickly moving back onto topic.....

I can't wait until Kryties head is finished!!!

Re: Red Dwarf Kryten pepakura head?

please can you add the chest and shoulders.
but I think I recall a cod piece as I remember that was where he attached the hoover lol as shown here in the 1st photo of s7

Larry's Red Dwarf Homepage

I also found this photo of the suit.

First up, thanks for all the references everyone! Far better than those I found, hopefully I'll be able to make a usuable costume model from them. I should be able to get started in the next couple of days.

Secondly, unfortunately I think I'm going to have to revise the Kryten head model a bit :unsure The great new references show me a couple of things that could be improved quite a bit, mostly in size and proportion.

I do think the changes will probably be worthy of a new unfold, though obviously that'll be up to paperjon. Once I've made the changes, I'll upload the model and I guess he can check whether he thinks it would be advantageous enough to warrant going through the unfold process again(sorry!).

@paperjon: Sorry about that. No pressure from me to redo it though, you've already done heaps for this. Thanks for the reference collection too, it should be very helpful.

@HMS Mike: I've not seen the American pilot, but thanks for showing your work. It's nice to see more detailed shots of professional work.

@Howlrunner: Thanks for the thread rename, sorry again for taking it off topic :$

@unheard: Kryten's groinal socket :p

If the costume model goes well enough, you'll be able to take the chest and shoulders from that. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for the images. That shot of the gang walking is from the 'Back to Earth' specials, not exactly what I was looking for but still a useful shot as it shows Kryten in his entirety. I got a handful of good images off Larry's Red Dwarf Homepage too.

@DetachableToe Hey no worries maybe if you could change the expression of the edit or something, may be able to convince my fiancee to build it again lol. Testbuild of the kryten head i did unfold is going great nearly finished its looking awesome. As for reference material no problem i tried to get him from as many angles as i could :) Someone made a good suggestion to me the other day, a light bee could be simple :)

*hey quick reference pic update scroll down for props here*
now back to kryten be finished very very soon :)

Good stuff paperjon! It's nice to see it off the computer :)

Not to be annoying, but here is the revised head model. Better or worse?

From looking at the new references I thought his head was quite bloated. It may look like his neck is too skinny now, but I think that him not having a collar makes it look that way.

If you do want to unwrap it again, I'd wait a while as I'll probably tweak it a bit more yet. The texture will likely need to be updated too.

Also an image of the started suit pieces. Not looking too good yet, but I figured I'd show I've at least started.

@DetachableToe Thanks!

yeah your right it does look better now (but i still really like the one me and my fiancée built) head was a bit long before etc
Dont worry lol we wont unfold it again to you think its ready as my fiancée spent hours building this one :)
Suits already looking good:)
Guess i will start work on the Bazookoid soon if you think its ready being cheeky now sorry any chance of textures? The slightly lower polly one is the one i was thinking of doing. There is a problem though that guy that built one (but didnt share it grrrr lol) couldn't fit the unfold at life sized on normal sized paper a4/letter(depending on where everyone lives) all though you can split parts in pepakura you can only split along the edge of the vertices. Only way i can think of around this is to cut the bigger bits in to sections on the 3d model. Anyway all this is being cheeky and probably be a lot of work, so you dont have to do it and if you do there is no rush.
Also did you notice i mentioned a light bee someone suggested it to me could be simple, if i had more time at the moment i would do it. I just have so much work to do and all my free time pretty much is taken up by papercraft lol.

that look amazing, I love checking this theard

Spare Head Three asks about his pep head “How long did it take to panel beat my head into shape?”

Kryten ”Not long enough!”

Unheard quote's word's of Ace RIMMER "Smoke me a kipper ill be back for breakfast"

Cast Of Red Dwarf "What a guy"

Red dwarf Salute

Life has many questions. What happened to the dinosaurs? Why did people ever think flares were fashionable? Why is there always a monsoon during wimbledon? Why is babestation only available between the hours of 1am and 6am?

Has kryten stopped smoking? Have his circuits been repaired? Does spare head three still think he's a hippopotamouse? Tune in next week to get an answer to these and all other important questions!!

LoL
