RED 4 - Hero X-Wing with machined armature (motorized)

Re: Hero X-Wing with machined armature (motorized)

Looks great Julien!

Just a question: on your unpainted engines there are two colors of resin. It looks like you added the details later in a lighter resin by putting a mold directly on the bare engine to get that great detail. Is this right?

It looks like a unique way of working...

Or were the details the first pour and the other color resin for the bodies of the engine in the second pour?

Looks really good, Julien! Always appreciate a nice X-wing engine! :)

Sweet as dude, one of the best!.

Thats some stunning craftsmanship J-man, looking forward to more of the progression on this one!!:thumbsup

Thanks for your kind words guys !
Im glad you like it. I hope I will give it a good paintjob !

Scott, yeah I did a first pour for the details (I dont have any pressure pot) then I put the second part of the mold and did a second pour, that's the only way for me to get gree bubble castings !

Re: Hero X-Wing with machined armature (motorized)

That's an interesting way of working Julien. If I ever get back to casting (as always without a pressure pot) I will try it your way. Your castings came out great!

I'm looking forward to getting back to working on my red leader when Mike Salzo can help me with new castings (after that huge viper he's doing). Did you state which x-wing you will portray?

Re: Hero X-Wing with machined armature (motorized)

I just noticed your video for the first time...that's awesome!

Have you resolved the rotation problems yet?

Hey guys,

Here a vid of the wings opening/closing.

The wings tilt around the pipe because the whole mechanism is not fixed to the pipe nor to the fuselage yet.

I have to slow down the speed.

Re: Hero X-Wing with machined armature (motorized)

Thanks guys,

Scott, yeah that's a good way to get clean castings at low cost (but with big part it can be pretty borring to do...).

Yeah I resolved the rotation problem (but now that the whole model which rotates on the mouting pipe :D).

Here's an old vid (now the X-Wing is secured to the pipe with a screw which locks the mounting pipe, this screw is hidden by the R2 plate).

Colin, Hero wings are not very diffcult to do and the result is very cool ! (plus they dont warp :p). I love those undercuts, you should give it a try on your next X-Wing !

Re: Hero X-Wing with machined armature (motorized)

I think I am overusing the word "insane" lately. I love the motorization, is the speed adjustable or is it already "screen accurate" ?

I'm going to have another X-Wing? Fantastic! I'll just tell the girlfriend the good news...

Could I ask you if your wingspan is the same as the V3 wing? Or is it a bit bigger? Thanks so much....

No the speed is not screen accurate yet, the speed will be adjustable from the remote, it should be a bit slower I think !

Colin, we never know ! :D Once you build one you want to build the full squadron and more once you see X-Wings which never appeared on screen ! :love

I cant answer precisely to your question because I dont have the V3 wings (I bought only the fuselage from Mike). I know mine are bigger than the V2 but the V3 are bigger than the V2 too... if you can give me the wingspan of the V3 I can answer your question !

Good and bad news !

The good news is that I found in my stack the decal sheets they used on Red 4 (it's covered by several decals :)), the bad news is that my decals are a bit old and they are yellowish now :(
I was told to put them directly to the sunlight but it can take several days/weeks and sometimes that doesnt work... but I will give it a try !

Re: Hero X-Wing with machined armature (motorized)

Thanks for getting back... I think the best measurement you can give me would be from the Saturn 5 can out to the wing tip - by 'wing tip' I'm not including the little flap that protrudes out the side. (When I look at front and top views of ILM Xs, I keep half-wanting to move the guns slightly further out... in my madness and blindness, lol...) On the V3 it's 14.4cm. I just wondered where you'd placed it...

Re: Hero X-Wing with machined armature (motorized)

Colin, my wings are 3mm longer from the saturn can to the tip, they are 14,7 mm.

The part which holds the cannon is placed 0.9mm from the tip of the wing.

I can take pic if Im unclear !

Re: Hero X-Wing with machined armature (motorized)

Well I'm working on the R5 unit right now and I noticed that the R2 unit provided with the kit is undersized :(

The R5 unit of Red 4 has a body diameter of 20mm (R2 from the kit has a body diameter of 16.5mm). The slots into the fuselage for the R2 - R5 unit shoulders of Red 4 are wider than the slot for the R2 strip (which is not the case in the kit because Moe based the fuselage on the Hero Red 3. ). Also the slot for the R2 unit should be a bit backward from the cockpit. Since Im building a "what if hero Red 4" I will not modify anything (Ive just moved backward the R2 slot) and I will based my R5 unit on the dimensions of the R2 unit from the kit !

Re: Hero X-Wing with machined armature (motorized)

I did a structure for the dome from styrene then I used something called "Répar' express", I think that's some epoxy putty to fill my structure. Then I used putty, I sanded it smooth to get the correct shape.
Still have to paint silver the shoulder joints and black and red the eyes.
