Is it just not letting you post ?

"Official" RPF recasting/stealing ideas post?

After reading a post where a new member basically said "Hey if you had something available, we wouldn't buy from people ripping off your idea!" maybe we should have a stuck post about respecting other people's work and not supporting people who recast or steal other people's work? Sort of an official policy that you should support if you're on here.

Granted we are in the gray so to speak, but there are rules and protocol for this hobby so we should let the new members know.

Re: "Official" RPF recasting/stealing ideas post?

A agree this would be a good idea but i feel it would become nothing more than a "he recasts" "no he recasts" thread as so many other threads have even if they dont start out this way, unless it was written and locked but this would leave no scope for member input and afterall its the members who make the forum.

Re: "Official" RPF recasting/stealing ideas post?

Jason,

We are actually working on a revision and clarification of the Junkyard rules and guidelines and I think your suggestion might be a good addition to those rules. I do need to tell you that those updates are taking a back seat to the software upgrade and we probably won't see them until after the upgrade.

From a staff/site perspective, while we personally have very strong opinions on recastsing, we have to be very careful with what we say or post as a site-wide policy in order not to paint outselves into a corner, which can easily be done with an issue that the membership holds such a wide range of opinions on. While most members frown upon recasting, the definition of what recasting is varies so much from person to person that making blanket statements can get us into trouble very fast.

Definitely a good idea and one will we certainly consider as we move forward.

Re: "Official" RPF recasting/stealing ideas post?

Good idea!

Art, feel free to give me a shout if you want a little feedback from a fussy propmaker such as myself.

Re: "Official" RPF recasting/stealing ideas post?

Stealing 'ideas' seriously? This is a prop and costume forum, they are all stolen 'ideas', so now it's proposed that the first one on this forum to 'replicate' something seen in a movie or what not in a replica prop or costume into a tangible item has exclusive rights?

I can see flat out coping (recasting) or reverse engineering part for part someone else's design but simply borrowing an the 'idea' (that was almost certainly not original to start with) and building upon it by creating a competitive or similar product sorry I find that just plain silly and stupid... That's called free enterprise and an open market...

BTW this page explains the silliness of Ideas vs. Inventions...

http://www.tenonline.org/art/9010.html

The best line from that page...

Simply recognize the difference between an invention and an idea -- and quit trying to protect ideas.

And for the record, if we start protecting 'ideas' around here...

I want to be first to say, that I have this 'idea' to make this prop from this movie/TV show or film and I also have an 'idea' to implement this other 'idea' into it and possibly other 'ideas'... So for future debate I had these 'ideas' first and now they are mine exclusively, since I don't want anyone to steal them and flood eBay I'm not telling anyone what these 'ideas' are just yet... Just wanted it to be on record that they were my 'ideas' first thus voiding anybody else's ability to do anything similar around these parts... Just to be clear they are now all my 'ideas' and I have now claimed my exclusive rights to those 'ideas' here, I'll let you know when you infringe on my 'ideas'... Silly?

Re: "Official" RPF recasting/stealing ideas post?

Really??!?!?

Will there be a passage acknowledging the hypocrisy of such a position?

Re: "Official" RPF recasting/stealing ideas post?

yes I frown upon recasting and make all of my Items from scratch........
I feel that this forum is about creating your own version.......and if anyone ever wants to jump in and build along side me or post there version along side mine I am all for it.........If it was the first to post an idea owns it this place would be a mess..........I want to build this item but need to check the I have dibs on it list to make sure someone didn't already have RPF Rights to it..........if I am misunderstanding please forgive me, it is just what I thought I read........by the way I have dibs on all trek related prop builds! :love:lol:lol

Re: "Official" RPF recasting/stealing ideas post?

It is rare to have one member start a project, and have another member come in and do the same project, but it does happen. It happened to me once, but I didn't cry foul. Thats just life. I started another project.

It is hard to make a rule about something like this. The fact is we are all stealing ideas.

As for recasting. Rules or not. This board, and its members do their best to call a recaster out, and destroy them.

exoray, that was a great read! Thanks for sharing! I do have to disagree with you on what is the best part though... to me, the best part of that writeup was:

First, most people won't share your enthusiasm for your idea -- even if it's a good one. People mentally resist change -- they cling to the status quo. The overwhelming majority of people exposed to your idea will reject it out-of-hand.
