Rebuilding AMT/MPC Millennium Falcon Again

Ahh .... The old "Easy Off Falcon" method. **** man you really like punishment don't ya. Good luck mate though I don't think you'll need it.

For god sakes when you get the subassemblies together drop it into some RTV!

If you are no good at casting I'll put my meager skills at casting to it :) Just mail it to me and I'll give it a shot :D

(fighting the darkside urges to keep it of course)

Looking forward to seeing it come back together :)

One thing I have noticed about forums like this. People take a project that is cast and they make there adjustments and improvements. If I can get it started, and people share what they can improve on what I do, there should be some amazing AMT falcons built.

I have made the second half of the Wankel engine, and made sure it fits on the AMT shell, will upload pics tonight if I get a chance. Next I will pic through the good and the bad parts from each side wall.

Love the ANH Falcon..My favorite version of the ship..I remember seeing it on the screen the first time way back in 1977..Love at first site!
 
Thanks Jedimaster, the work you guys are doing on the part id's is helping a lot. I can find scans and detail parts a little more.

Jedi Dade, I may take you up on that. I will have a go at casting some small repetitive parts and see how it turns out. But I think I will need help casting it all together. RE: side walls as maybe one or two pieces. etc.

Beatle, I need your advice on optics and lighting. Was never mappy with the lighting i did. Yours was spectacular.

Just to show I am working on it, I have stollen "Rodmarts" charts andam using them for scale and placeing parts. I found a few parts that acualy match the scale. Not spot on but with a little resculpting will work great.

Yes I do have progress, but only bits and pieces here and there. I thought I would wait untill I at least had an area to show, rather than individual bits. I need to settle on one area and concentrate on that for a bit I think.

I have also been trying to find some donor parts, but It seems nothing works out to the correct scale. the 1/144th tank kits. (I found one localy) are just too small. They look wrong. So it looks like I will scratch most of them.

Although a talented member here on RPF has offered some castings for me to work with that he did for his own falcon, which are outstanding. They will make short work of the engine deck.

I am also cutting the falcon body up, so as to make the engine deck a seperate peice, to be removable.

I will take some pics this weekend, to show you the mess??

I picked up one fothe Dragon can-do tigers and cast it up then cut it up and it fit perfectly on the rear engine deck... almost the exact size of the flat blob of crud that on the original kit, only this had a much of detail :thumbsup :)

They are all over ebay... I'm surprised an actual 1/144 kit would not fit...

you do need to keep the beveled sides - well part of them. I remeber sanding the thickness down so that it was all the right height, but after that minor bit it looked perfect. of course you're a pretty good scratcher so you're will probably look just as good :D

The one Igot was "tanks of the world" series. It fits as you said in the "crud" area, but its exactly the same size as the FM falcon part. And the FM is just that smaller than the AMT. I can see the difference, but I suppose it will do If I can not scratch it to say 1/140. Ya ya, I know the 1/04th is hardly worth it, but it just dont look right. I suppose thats why I am not getting anything finished LOL.

I have got one thing 95% finished, the iner Mandable. It only one side and I plan on trying my hand at casting, so I will cast this and make the different one on the other side. The gun in the middle is something a member here cast up/sculpted, so its there for the moment only untill I get permision to use it or I can make anotherone.

The F1 wheel has been a nightmare as well to get the right size and height.Now I find there are two different ones on the back engine deck Ahhhhhhhh.

Anyway. Heres something thats almost finished. I should be able to show other areas I am 50% finished in the comming week.

*ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES AND GLOVES*

I've always worked by weight. I use a small old kitchen scale and medicine cups to pour my two part resin into. Stir with a small wooden stick, then I utilize a plastic syringe, filling what I can, and taping out the air bubbles.

I should let you know, I don't have a pressure pot.

Before all this, I dust my molds with Talcum Powder using an artists fan brush, enabling the resin to flow into the really tight detailed areas. I have a plastic tray with T.P. and I just lay it on the molds, then I flip the molds over and spank the backside, getting rid of the excess T.P. back to the tray. Once the molds are prepared, I piece them together with rubber bands and I inject the resin. I try to have extra molds of various subjects set aside for any extra resin that I can use up that's in the syringe.

With areas that give me air bubbles, I'll punch a "vent hole" into the mold, just to eliminate the air pocket.

I hope this helps.

Hey Ozzy , looking good mate. I was watching the blu ray extras disc again yesterday. And low and behold sitting on a shelf in the archives inside a plexi case was sitting an MPC falcon. So technically it was screen accurate until you started this. Week worth the effort though.

I wonder if it was ever used on-screen. Was the view clear enough to show whether they corrected the engine deck and sidewall height? I guess ILM can build anything and make it look like a real prop. They can work magic on anything.

An AMT was used in ESB and ROTJ, can't remember what sceens that was in though or if it even made it on screen. I have feeling it was used somewhere in the asteroid scenes in ESB and in the non used sand storm scenes in ROTJ. From what I remember it was not modified in any way. Hence Simon is correct, a stock AMT is actualy studio scale prop. lOL.

Anyone confirm.

Ohh Crackerjazz, I have not given up on the Wankel engine has brow size yet either.

Couldn't make out any extra work done as it was a side view partly obscured by another model but the sidewalk height was not adjusted. That was the giveaway. The rear starboard side wall panel was removed and replaced with wood. The wood has holes/ mounting points in it. I'll take a pic tonight.
 
I'm pretty sure the stock kit did nto see any screen time. I know they used it in the anamatics where they were trying to lay out the shots in pre-production... but nothing on the screen.

Sctachy - the one under the frigate was one made custom for that shot and was around 10 inches... here's a pic of it I took at the MoM in brooklyn a ways back...
