Rebel Transport scratchbuild.

Re: A storm is coming!

Sweet! Also love that ship...none other has that much of a chaos look! :lol This will be fun to watch.

Re: A storm is coming!

Cheers guys, will try get some more progress maybe Monday, i just finished trimming the nose, id made some adjustments to the hull depth, and forgot about the nose adjustment, its really angles upwards, so thats now rectified and looks much better.

Dan, yes it is pure chaos, kit bashers dream really, IMO a typical Ease Owyeung build much like Slave One in its concept.

Wont be too long hopefully till we really get to the fun stuff...panels, and kit parts :eek

Lee, you are crazy :wacko

No question, another (or the) holy grail.
good luck :thumbsup

Re: A storm is coming!

From the thread title I thought this was something to do with The Terminator. :lol

Re: A storm is coming!

Somehow Lee I knew you were goin to build this thing, just a matter of when!. Looks awesome dude, I'm curious to just how you formed the body?. Did you vacform over a form or is it some other method?.
I guess like many here Iv'e pondered over this model tryin to ID kit parts but man the lack of ref, only managed to Id about 10 parts or so.
Lookin forward to this build for sure, you da man for knocking out these elusive 'Empire' treasures.

Re: A storm is coming!

Stu, the forms were pulled from custom made bucks, sadly these bucks no longer exist as they were badly damaged during the forming process, as many sets were made per model, due to the fact, there is a primary pull for each section of the model, hull, engines lower plates etc, then several layered sections that make up the intricate panel work.
These are all cut from various thickness of pull, the primaries being the thickest for strength.
ID wise, were doing very well, as well as can be as this thing is so complex, the majority of the main basic shapes are now found, as are some of the well hidden parts on the model, a few key elements still elude us though...the top "pod" on the central fin, and the engine bells (id love to find these) still need to be found.

The engine bells i had down as F1 rims, but ive check all the Tamiya 1/12 kits, and nothing matches the "thimble" like profile...maybe ILM handcrafted them...as they do appear to be possibly alloy to withstand the heat of the bulbs?

In any case, some new ref would be awesome of her, did she ever tour at any exhibits? Id love to know if anybody out there could have photographed her at some point, though, more ref brings more time IDing, trying to find those illusive parts lol, and would add maybe an easy 12 months to the build...hence, im happy to carry on with the info at hand and have a few parts custom made.

Re: A storm is coming!

Lee, I wouldn't sweat it too much on the ID'ing of this. It's a cargo ship, it's configuration would have changed for each mission, I'd just have fun with it and build it as close as you can get it.

Re: A storm is coming!

More ESB madness... LOVE IT! Was hoping someone would get to this baby. Looking great. Will be watching.

Re: A storm is coming!

Ive neever seen pics of touring RT:cry
in nay case I love the design and would like to help you somehow.. thats what I have found on the net.. Im sure you have them already.. but you never now :lol

Re: A storm is coming!

Lee
You are off to a great start. I look forward to your progress.

Re: A storm is coming!

Bluelight, cheers bud, but yes we have those, the last pic, is from Chronicles, id give my right arm (well maybe not lol) for a hi res of that pic, it has such a lot to offer, but its postage stamp size in the publication is so annoying lol.

Rich, agreed, itll still look and feel like an RT, as i said, all the major "seen" stuff is pretty much nailed....guess the problem areas right now, are the brim trench, engine bells, and upper pod...other than that, weve ID'd a a fair bit under the nose and engine bay.

Surely she must have toured in the late 80's, maybe along with the Neb B frigate....pity there is no more ref, but it wont hamper plans at all!

For the longest time whenever I looked at that pod and the shape of the hull I pictured an akula class submarine. Then I thought maybe the hull was a large booster rocket. What's the consensus? the original was vacformed right?

Yeah Billy, the hull is a form, not a kit part. I have big gut feelings, some of the lesser known donors used by ILM, on say, the Neb B, are possibly used on the RT as well, the style of chaos building leads me to that i guess and those engine bells...whacky to say the least, as Mcquarrie's painting, clearly depicts a Saturn V bell.

The top pod, closest calls, are droptanks from and aircraft kit, ive ID'd two small parts glued to the pod, but the pod body itself, still a mystery sadly.

Re: A storm is coming!

Hi Lee,

You've probably seen this already when you googled it, but Lasse's transport looks like a good reference:

http://www.modelermagic.com/?p=4993

Scott, yes buddy, watched this one for a long time, sad to see she never got finished.
The hull by Lasse is just sublime (what isnt from Lasse?) but we just wanted to go a big step forward on actual prop accuracy, without being bogged down with impossible finds from the very poor ref out there in various publications i guess.

Re: A storm is coming!

Love the model....one of my favorite from ESB....oh how I wish I could just find the time to build one.....not even sure where to start!

Looks great.

Nice reference from the SW radio show.

Re: A storm is coming!

Looking really nice! I always wanted to build this ship, unfortuantely the available reference photos are a bit too small to id parts. Looks like you found the only 2 parts that i am aware of.

Re: A storm is coming!

Looking forward to watching the progress! I've always liked this ship.

Somebody explain "Quantum Storm" reference to me. Is that the EU name for one of the cargo ships or something? If so, that's a rather lofty name for a glorified U-Haul! ;)

(And why were these ships in the middle of the DSII attack fleet in ROTJ?)

Re: A storm is coming!

That's so cool to see new subjects ! Very refreshing, very nice progress so far, Im very excited about seeing more updates !
