Re-imagining the 11th Dr. Sonic screwdriver..

Thanks for the comments.

I like mach 3, it's simple, which means I can cope with it. I have used it now for several years, and have had only a few minor problems. Mostly with a couple of the wizards. I use a pocketing operation rather than the surfacing wizards as that seems to be easier to configure.

I will be starting the other part of the handle next. So more fun to come.:)

Off to an engineering show next week with a shopping list!

What's all this barking about trees? Let's leaf that alone and get back to the subject at hand. No branching out in the conversation now! Don't worry, be sappy.

Well I for one Woodn't want to Alder the direction of this Poplar? thread. However we should conCedar these Knotty problems as they Walnut Leaf us unamused.

Thank Yew for your contribution.

Just a small diversion, I have been working on this design for another forum member. I have added a presentation stand, so that it doesn't "float".

What do you think?

Back to the handle on 11 tomorrow.

A quick update, almost a drive-by.

Hi everyone, I have made the black part of the handle, it just needs a little work and some holes drilling, but this part is complete. I am off to an engineering show on Saturday, but will post pics and a more comprehensive update hopefully on Sunday.

No feedback on the Jellyfish design. :unsure

Maybe this thread needs some controversy? Perhaps an argument over a brightly painted oblong strip of plywood! ;)

This is an awesome endeavor. I am happy to see such talented individuals put together amazing items.

Well done!:thumbsup

You are a MAD genius! I had seen your work on the Teletran design and it just blows my mind. This alone is just mindbogglingly amazing. Some of the best work I've seen in ages. I'd kill a bus load of monkey's for your interpretation of the Teletran sonic. XD The intricate additions to the emitter with the offset six pin design and that three pillar cone on the neck...oh and that clear blue rod with the brass triangular accents on it...that is beautiful. This new build alone is just gorgeous. Really, I am impressed as hell. You just don't see that sort of intricate attention to detail often. (O.O) I loooooove it! Sorry I'm rambling but that sort of detailing, when done right pushes my buttons in all the right ways. XD

Another quick update, I will post a full update tomorrow.

I have been working on the handle this weekend, well part of Sunday. The workshop was a disaster area, so a clean and tidy up was in order. A very enjoyable, although expensive trip to an engineering show occupied Saturday. Mostly the work on the sonic has been getting the holes and pockets made for the switches. Once this is done I will be moving on to making the centre tube cap and support ring for the extending mechanism.. I need to order some batteries for the sonic, and have to work out how to charge them in situ.

And then...

All the moving parts will need to be stripped down, polished and reassembled ready for the final assembly. How nice those words sound... I have to say them again, final assembly.. aaaahh. :)

Pics, the ongoing saga of the mill and another visit to the hitch-hikers universe... Will the fun never end.

I don't mean to be obtuse, but, you certainly seem to have brought a new angle to the conversation. :lol

Thanks to all for the comments.
I'm off to bed, see you soon...

Truth be told I've been angling for something to say about your work on your sonic but most of the time the quality and intricacy of the work leave me gobsmacked and speechless. You really are an amazing talent. If I hit the lottery you're hired to build me random gadgets.

As for the other sonic design: I posted about it in another thread that I liked it. It was a very cool combination of elements from all the existing sonics. Very good combination of taking what the artist liked and arranging them in a recognizable and enjoyable way.

Thank you for your comments.

First I must apologise for my lame attempt at humour last night, well, lamer than usual. :)

This will only be a quick update as I am presently sitting on a bench in Aberystwyth watching the tide.

I have thought about this for some time. I worked on the Jellyfish drawing for some time, and must admit when I saw it in the competition thread with no accreditation I was a little peeved. Whilst I freely gave my time and modest skills, I would have appreciated an acknowledgement in that post.

Anyway, onward to the next update in this saga. "Not a lot to show, and boy does it show. "

Thanks everyone. If you enjoy want you see and read, feel free to say so. If you hate it also say so, but be gentle. If you think Mattel is a toy company please say so in the Hover board thread... Heh heh.
The fireworks will be awesome..

Nothing wrong with having a little humour, I do think the world today has gotten way to serious.
You’re doing an excellent sonic build, with excellent photos with detail, just love the cnc machining mill & lathe action shots, it just shows how much work goes into such a build.

Oh and njoy watching the tied roll in.

Pssst, over here, I've got a nice little update for you!

Well hello there, nice to see you all again. Today we will mostly be considering little pieces of black plastic.

Why is it that no task seems to be completely finished? Anyway on to the work recently done. I have finally made the black part of the handle, including the recesses and switch housing. how did you make it I hear you ask?

Starting with a round bar of Delrin/Acetal approximately 40mm in diameter and 150mm long. This was carefully, with humourous quips from my neighbour over the fence about my inability to saw in a straight line, sawn in half lengthwise, the two pieces were then sanded and the pieces glued together. The pice was then installed in a 4 jaw chuck on the lathe and centred. The outside diameter was then turned down to the 31mm required for the largest diameter of the handle. I have a specially ground tool which was used to rough out the steps to form the waist in the handle. The tool started life as a 60 degree threading tool, which has been reground after the tip chipped badly. With the lathe spinning the part slowly the profile of the waist for the handle was made using a combination of files. Once this was completed the inside diameter was bored out to size. Unfortunately during the initial drilling of the part the work got quite hot resulting in the superglue bond failing. I resorted to a few cable ties to support the work while the boring operations were completed.

The handle was parted off from the stock and test fitted on the Aluminium housing and sanded to fit. Once this was completed the holes for the switches were drilled and a pocket milled for the switch housing. The switch housing is self was a much simpler task. (Yeah right).

A piece of Delrin was cut to an appropriate size, ie, too small! So another piece was sawn from a block previously purchased in case of just such a need. Mounted in the lathe it was faced then the profile of the box milled. Things then went awry. I may have mentioned that my CNC mill is a home conversion that from time to time likes to find interesting and complex ways of failing. This time the X-Axis jammed, but only in one direction. I heard this from a couple of feet away but was too late to save 2 hours of work.£$%&*%!!!

So most of Sunday evening was spent stripping down the X-Axis drive on the mill, cleaning and adjusting the motor mount and rebuilding the mill. Finally the work-piece was reinstalled and the switch housing milled. I will need to re-tram the mill though and check backlash and calibration due to the messing about.

So there it is, about half the work I wanted to do but another small step forward.

So Pictures, soon.

Further random ramblings from the Galactic Hitch-hiker.

I was operating a scooter concession near the Quentulus Quazgar Mountains, where God's last words can be found, Its's an impressive sight, and if you get the chance you should go. Any how, who should call at my stand but the bloke who borrowed my towel. Arthur I think his name was. So he asks me about renting a scooter. I had to tell him that they are only for the return journey. Nice guy, still has my towel!

And now, finally, the event you have all been waiting for....
The pics.
