I thought I would show off my new droid. I started him about a year and a half ago. He is based on Dave Everett's styrene plans. You can find more info about him HERE. Photos of my build HERE. He is 99% plastic!

He is almost done. I am hoping to weather him in the coming weeks. Right now he does not move, yet. :D

Here is what he is based on

Looks great! I'd suggest when you weather it (assuming you do) that you make sure and get in the cracks around the panels etc so they aren't washed out in the pics if you take my meaning.

Like the pic on the figure. The panels are very easy to see due to the shading/grime/outline around them.

Very nice lil droid! Is the dome plastic as well???

Thanks for the complements! Weathering is next on my list of thing to do to him. Seeing that the 2 droids Mace had where destroyed, I figure he would take take very good care of R4.

The dome is also styrene. Seeing I am a Jango guy, I rub'n'buffed it. Here is how the dome started out http://187thlegion.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=37

stupid question , did you buy the domes or make them yourself. Those are sweet by themselves. I hadn't seen the plans yet , so i might say in there as well. Something about having a shelve of finished domes of various droids excites me.

I did not make the dome. I bought the outer and inner dome with ring over at http://astromech.net/forums It is a C&D dome and ring. They just finished a run of them laser cut. I did mine by hand. They might have some uncut domes left. Here is a link to the laser cut run that ended a few months ago. http://astromech.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3489

thanks man , just researching it , I just signed up for Astromech.net and it is mindblowing to be sure. I have several sizes of those " security camera " domes and when i can check out the plans see what the measurements are, I can build them inner/outer hopefully.
I would like to just have the domes for several in the R2 series and build a full r5d4..always my favorite one for some reason. Yours looks great , good to see someone going outside the box for a change on the R2 series.

Looks great man!

Get those electronics in there and we can race. My money is on your light and agile droid. :cool

Yeah no kidding, I'd love to see those plans.

I always thought you had to build the astromechs using metals..the only ones I have ever seen were.

Plastic..that would rock and probably be way cheaper to.

There are lots of droids with wood frames, and legs, plastic, resin, fiberglass and metal (aluminum and steel) it's really builder preference.
The dome is really the toughest part to make and there is a builder making nice vacuum-formed ones and also spun aluminum, both with laser cut outer shells.
Dave Everett (the R2 Builders group founder) posted plans to the group for building all but the dome from Sintra.
Makes for a fairly straightforward and lightweight build, from what I have heard. And yes, MUCH cheaper!
There are laser cut and hand cut sintra skins also available from a few members too.

Excellent job on the droid, Asok!

Excellent work, Asok! How much do you think your all-styrene droid weighs?

i wonder that same , but after seeing some of the build logs , I would guess it could vary. I would reinforce him with wood frame and legs myself. the resin parts would be the weight more than anything I would imagine
