R2D2 on a budget *New Photos Up

Re: R2D2 on a budget

mine was made out of a 18" squirel blocking bird feeder dome thingy ??...it was years ago...but I only paid 25 bucks for it ...dont know if they make them anymore....I made this guy years ago mostly out of foam/wood, and plastic posterboard for the skin...(never did finish legs :sick )

That is simply incredible!

Re: R2D2 on a budget

Great build bucket, i hope to get somewhere near that! I'll start posting WIP photos soon!

Re: R2D2 on a budget

Definitely in to see this done on a budget, my son would love this.

Worst case scenario, what about using the budget to just rent one for the night? I'm sure there is an R2 owner looking to make some extra cash.

Good point, although my payment for the build is getting to keep whatever I make!

Re: R2D2 on a budget

I checked with the company and they confirmed their squirrel domes were actual domes so I went ahead with this one. Photos are cell phone quality but I'll use a real camera to document the build.

Re: R2D2 on a budget

Progress for day #1. Working on legs and under skirt later this weekend.

Re: R2D2 on a budget

I'll also add that I used a wide angle lens so the proportions might seem off. Following original measurements scaled down about 2in for my slightly smaller dome.

Are you going to put lights in it?

Yes, not sure how complex but it will at least have the basic blue square lights and the red/blue circle. I am also adding a small projector inside the eye piece.

Re: R2D2 on a budget

This should be a great build. :) I'll be watching this for sure, maybe I missed it but are you working form plans or just building as you'd like?

A mix of the two, the way I usually work is by feel and with my budget I won't be going for 100% accuracy. However I do plan to scale the body/legs as close as possible to the original and add plenty of styrene for added detail.

Re: R2D2 on a budget

Update for the week(end). Started working on the legs. So far only the basic outline is done. Adding more layers/detail soon. Added a hinge for the dome so I can easily adjust the projector and lights. Also, no feet yet!

Re: R2D2 on a budget (working on legs)

You work fast!

Better not slow down until you're done, or Brad will come in and start giving you ****! ;)

Re: R2D2 on a budget (working on legs)

Well I'm pooped, this is all for the night! Just thought I'd show a mock up of where I'm at. Notice the front foot is not supported by the skirt yet (still need to cut it) so it will be a bit taller.
