Morning fellas,

It should be noted that the dome that is currently on auction can only be described as stolen property...

When filming wrapped up after Episode 1 all the droids were crated up and sent back to the archives...Mysteriously this dome was not returned...

Several months later someone posted on the R2 Builders boards looking to sell it...That is until they heard about Don Bies being a frequent guest in our group...Once someone mentioned his name, the seller and dome disappeared...

For the last few years I've wondered what ever happened to that dome...It's an ANH original used extensively by Kenny Baker in the original trilogy...

In the late 80's and early 90's it became Don's favorite dome to use for publicity appearances...It can also be seen on the LFL Archives picture that was used on the cover of the Smithsonian magazine several years ago.

From what I've gathered talking with Don, this dome was never officially released by LFL, and is technically still their property.

Please understand that I don't have a beef with the Harrison's as they may not even know the total history of this dome...So this is not meant as a shot to them...

However...The dome SHOULD be resting comfortably in the LFL archives...It is sad to me that it has instead ended up in that auction.

Intresting.... since this is such a public display of this prop I wonder if anyone from LFL will pursue the matter.

Not sure...

I know that several people over at LFL know about the auction...

Originally I thought it being over in England might make it difficult to get it back legally...But the auction says it is currently in California...So that might make it easier to take back.

Anyone know if there would be a time limit to try to reclaim this thing? It's been out of LFL's hands since the late 90's...

Jason

No limitation on property as long as they can prove with paperwork and the like that it is officially theirs.Strange how all this stuff keeps "popping-up" over at Elstree.

Sad that it was stolen and stuff, but if it was resting in the Lucas archives, I wouldn't get to see it at all. I'm glad I get to see something like this, even for a short time.

if it really was stolen....don't you think that Lucas would be all over that? How can profiles in history sell stolen property?

Hey Wayne,

If LFL went after every costume or prop piece that left their control under "suspicious" circumstances, it would become someone's full time job.

The reality is that many of the authentic artifacts that are currently in private collections were "slipped out the back door" so to speak...LFL has released stuff from time to time, either by auction or gift to someone that worked on the production...But that is a very SMALL amount compared to what is out there.

What makes this so much different (at least to me) is that it is a ANH original R2-D2 HERO dome...Not some cheesy fiberglass backup that was sitting on a naboo fighter somewhere...And it was supposed to be sent back with everything else after TPM wrapped...

There is NO WAY that this ended up on the scrap heap as they claim...No way...

This thing has a lot of history behind it...And it is just sad that someone is probably going to make some serious money for something that they never should have had in the first place...

Yup, it was....

And then it was removed from your thread without notice...

I posted my link...

Since the ownership of the piece is in question I believe it falls under the rules for being linked on the board, so here you go.

PIH has made a living selling unauthentcated and stolen property. Usually when you bring it to their attention it's on deaf ears.

as ive said before, even if i could afford any of the stuff i would never bid as most of it looks fake anyway.

IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM.

Howard Roffman over at LFL says he's keeping an eye on the Elstree folks passing off replicas as authentic, so I'd think something this big wouldn't get past them.
