R2-D2 foam build. Pictures of R2's trip to school.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

Thanks for the tips.
Don't supose anyone has a cool looping R2 wav file or anything. Just need something that plays several different R2 sounds over in a loop.

As a matter of fact...

I have about 40 squeaks, zaps, etc. - but they are all separate. I'd be happy to e-mail them to you...

I've got you covered man. PM me your email address.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

love this project -- thanks for posting progress pics.

for those who do not have the skills and/or patience to build one like this, you might consider the R2D2 trash can -- not anywhere near full size, but for a 5 to 7 year old, might be fine if all you are looking for is something for them to play with int heir bedroom and/or a nightlight.

I imagine this could be modified with lights and sounds pretty easy.

not knocking your hard work or derailing this thread -- i wish i had the skills to build what you are building -- but until then, my little trash can droid will have to do. ;)

I could not find these on web -- maybe they are sold out -- got mine a year or three ago for $100 or so, I think:

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

well, looks like the R2 trash cans are hard to come by -- originally sold for $125 to $150, but now I can only find them for $350 or more -- waaaay too much for such a thing if you ask me.

looks like if you want one that is half size to full size, you better start getting handy with foam construction! sorry for posting useless info!

Wheels are on feet and I have figured out how to attach the main legs to the feet. Here is a quick pic or two. The feet are now drying from their first coat of painting.

The center foot is going to be screwed onto the wooden leg, then I will build the foam leg around the wood. It will be a little thicker then it is supose to be in places but it will be hardly noticable.

this is an incredible build!!!!!! I love that it is mostly made of foam. AWESOME JOB!!!!!!!

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

Oh big time. My youngest boy (Alexander 3 yrs old) just loves it, he can't stop touching him and calling it his R2. My family are all excited that it is so close to being finished.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

2-3 days and then finished, I just have the middle leg to build and then paint it along with the middle foot (tomorrow) then there are some small tubes that fit on the outside of the main legs and either side of the middle leg (I have them half painted) I will glue them on once the paint is dry (Wednesday) and then fix the hoses to the outside feet and battery boxes (also Wednesday) Then just hook up the lights to one on/off switch and fix the dome to the body (Thursday) Then on Friday my son is hoping to be able to take it to show and tell. Laundry on Saturday, Church and family time on Sunday then Monday Wall-e begins.

You say it so casually.:) After just *reading* your schedule, I feel like taking a nap! :lol

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

That is going to be one AWESOME show and tell!
I wish I could have done that as a kid!

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

Ok so I did things in a little different order. Here is what I have done so far.
Here some of the leg/shoulder details. These were made using some dowel and screw pieces, the round pieces are twist tops to some new apple sauce drink my kids like.

I was able to use the foam leg I had originaly made for the center, I just hollowed it out and placed it around the wooden leg.

Here are the leg/shoulder details glued in place.
Looking good, I had a little bit of a hard time getting the center foot at the correct angle but finaly managed it.

Finished all the holo projectors on the dome.

I also spent some time on the lights today and painted the middle leg and foot. Tomorrow glue the main feet to the legs, fix the lights into the dome and then figure a way to fix the dome onto the body but still be able to lift it off when needed.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

Usually the domes are connected with a "lazy susan" - type bearing. Rubbermaid makes plastic ones. Check Amazon.com for sizes and prices;they seem to run between $9 - $20.

I'm sure you'd have no trouble attaching it to the body (make a hole in it for wires to pass through) and make some kind of "fitting" for teh dome to rest on.

Then you'll be able to make his head turn!

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

Jamie, that's incredible! From foam mats to R2; if I didn't follow this build with my own eyes,I wouldn't believe it!

I hope you're showing this guy off over at Astromech.net :D.

Wow. Just....wow.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

Thanks man, and yes I have been keeping a builders log over there as well. And it has been met with just as much appreciation and praise as over here. And I really apreicate it all.
I got my first real good look at R2 today I know that sounds silly, but all I normaly see of him is from real close up. Well today I left him in the front drive way drying and went out with my wife and kids. When were driving home I could see him in the distance and as he came more in to view it was like "WOW theres R2" He looked great. I am very pleased with how he has turned out. Still a few more things to do. I completely forgot about the large open data port on the front and I still have to do the ankel cylinders and foot hoses.
