R2-D2 foam build. Pictures of R2's trip to school.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. All front and side body panels finished.

That is awesome! I would love to build one of those. My son has recently gotten excited by R2D2. Maybe I will wait till he is a little older and work together on it. You have inspired me to actually build one. Now to convince my wife to let me build it.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. All front and side body panels finished.

Thanks for the kind words. I am sure your son would love it.

I second what Jamie said. Not that this applies to everyone, but my experience is that wives come and go (3 divorces under my belt) ... just do it. ;)

Amazing build, dude! And you're documenting the process nicely! Thank you! ^_^

Re: R2-D2 foam build. All front and side body panels finished.

Ok I have been thinking about how to do the dome panels, wasn't sure what would work best. Then I remembered that this was supose to be a "Foam Build" so I tried some thin craft foamies. I measured everything out and started glueing, however I came to realise that I had screwed up a little with the measuring. I had the top dome panels or pie pieces I have now come to realise they are called measured out on flat, but after I started to glue them on the dome I realised that they curve round and now they are two wide at the bottom problem is I had already glued some. So I had to cut the last two pie pieces a little smaller, to the trained eye it is soooo noticable but they are at the back and my son loves it and said it looks perfect and that is what counts.
Here is what I have now.

Thanks man, here's a bit more of an update, the dome is about 80% finished now, just need to drill a few holes for the holo projectors and then add the projectors.

Thanks.
Man cutting the holes was a pain in the you know what!.

Here is the foam pieces, someone sent me the actual piece but I couldn't cut the hole big enough.

Here is inside the dome. I will be hooking everything up to one on/off switch.

Here is the dome so far, with the lights on.

A little video of the lights.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

I had a bad day today - this cheered me right up!

Where did you get the cool lights?

Wow thanks, Sorry to hear that you had a bad day but I am glad my R2 cheered you up.
As for the lights I was pointed in the direction (by someone either on this board or the astromech.net) to an Ebay item, it is a programable belt buckle. Just do a search for "CHROME SCROLLING LED BELT BUCKLE BLUE" it cost me around $15 shipped.

Jamie! All of your builds just keep amazing me!! Your talents are astounding...

Thank you. I really appreciate that.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

I have a question. Anyone know how I could rig this so that all the lights would go off after 5 or 10 minutes. This is for my son's room he has night terrors and I would like this as a kinda night light. Have R2 with lights and scanners on but then switch off with a timer?. Any help would be great.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

Oooooh oooh ooo...or even better for your son - pick up a cheap motion-sensor nightlight and use that to trigger R2? Whenever your son is moving around R2 is awake to keep him company and gaurd the room. When he settles down R2 goes back to sleep. I know our exterior security light has a time on it so that motion triggers it, but it stays on for a few minutes after no motion is detected.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Dome 80% finished.

How are you powering R2? I think right now you are using batteries; you may need to set him up with a "powerpack" (AC adapter) so all the electrics are powered by a single AC cord. Then just get one of the programmable lamp or stereo timers and use that. Timers are pretty inexpensive; around $5 last time I bought one a few months back.

I like the idea of the motion-sensor, though. I think your little guy would feel *really* safe if he knew R2 would "wake up" if he sensed anything. Just make sure you put a volume control in R2 if you give him a voice! :lol
