R2-D2 foam build. Pictures of R2's trip to school.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Video of working lights.

Thanks guys, toneeboyy ask away my friend, I look forward to helping you.
Trooper_trent, I did try the soda bottle trick but here in Canada the only soda bottles I could find (My wife works part time in a store) they all had a lip that got in the way. I ended up buying a childrens night light at the bargain store for about $2-$3 and used the plastic dome from that. But I really appreciate the tip man.

I too have been trying to figure out a way to make the head spin but honestly this was supose to just be a static build for my kids room. So I am not going to lose sleep over it, however if I suddenly get an idea I might try it.
As for my next project, I will be posting a new thread this week, I am already on to my next project Wall-e. I have the part of his body done and the eyes. I will be starting a thread like I said this weekend.
Thanks again for the kind words.

I am hoping to et some pics of R2 with all the kids at school tomorrow.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Video of working lights.

That is awesome!!! i love how you did it almost entirely out of foam! i never would have though! hmmmm now the ol gears are turning! thanks for posting such a fantastic build! I bet those kids loved it!

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Video of working lights.

If I saw that from across the room I'd be easily fooled into thinking it was an expensive replica. Way to go Jamie! The kids at the school are going to love it. I'm known as the "cool dad" on the street because of my toys and I've got nothing this awesome. ;)

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Video of working lights.

sweeeeeeet! I've always wanted to make one that was remote controlled and could hold drinks and maybe the top flipped up to reveal food. you gotta admit, having R2D2 serve me dorritos would be awesome

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Video of working lights.

Huge thanks guys. I am really pleased with how this R2 turned out. Have to admit its a little sad that I will no longer be building him. But move on I guess. I really appreciate all the kind words and compliments. I have seen some of things you guys build and it inspires me to work harder at what I do.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Video of working lights.

Just got back from what can only be described as one of the best mornings of my life. I took R2-D2, a Proton pack with Ecto goggles, two different clone trooper helmets and several Ironman helmets (all in different stages of completion) to my kids school. WOW amazing time. First stop JK class (my little girl Hannah class) The kids were so happy, some of them couldn't believe their eyes, right in front of them was R2-D2!!! the smiles on some of the faces as I let them come up one by one and touch R2. Then I handed out the Ironman helmets and they all got to try them on. Then off to Grade 3 my oldest boys class. They were just as excited and some of them asked some really good questions I had a blast talking to them and they all got to touch him and try the helmets on aswell. Then a suprise visit to grade 1 my oldest girls class. Smaller class so a bit more controlled but still the electricity there was amazing. Just as I was packing things up an Aunt came to pick up her daughter and saw R2 and went all giddy. She asked if she could ran back to her car to get her camera phone, obviously I said sure. Then when she came back she was just about to take a pic of the kids with R2 when she looked at me and said "I know this sounds silly but could you take the pic so I could be in it" again obviously I said yes sure. I took pics for her. I wasn't able to take any pics of myself of the kids with R2 because I was too busy, but one of the teachers took lots so I am hoping to get a few for keep sake. All i can say is WOW what an amazing morning. I haven't stop smilling yet, it was a blast. R2 got one of two small scratches but nothing more and honestly nothing even really noticable, I won't bother cleaning them up because they will be a reminder of the R2's first day at school and how great it was. Seriously my face is hurting from smilling so much. I have worn costumes for halloween and a halloween kids party and it has been great but nothing compares to this. I always said I build these things because 1, I want to and 2, for kids of all ages to enjoy. Today just proved to me that is so true. Building R2 has been fun, but showing him and looking at the kids faces.... AWESOME feeling...

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Just had first public outing!!..

Just about the most satisfying ending that you could ask for in this thread! It's always surprising to see other people light up to this stuff because you can feel like you're the only one that's in to it when you're by yourself building.

I'm thrilled you were able to share your hobby with the school kids. I'll be expecting a few of them here in 10-15 years saying "I'm here because a guy came to our school once..."

:D

I got hold a copy of the picture I took of the aunt and her sisters kids she was picking up from the school, I am just waiting to hear from the Mum to see if I can post the picture here. I know the Mum and family very well, but I thought it correct to ask before posting pics of her kids. As soon as I get the all clear I will post the pic.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Just had first public outing!!..

So all that hard work pays off big! Congrats!!

Yeah, you may feel a little sad/empty now that R2 is complete, but I"m sure he'll be around the house, and you will upgrade him (I've no doubt you'll get his dome to spin, and maybe even motorize him to move!), and there will be other places to take him visiting...

Then there's Wall-E.... :D

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Just had first public outing!!..

Yup Wall-e is currently being built right now over at http://www.therpf.com/f9/foam-wall-e-149085/. And my son bought a telescope yesterday at a yard sale for $2 but he doesn't want it now, so I bought it of him. It has great potential for R2's periscope.
I just got permission from the Mum of the kids in the picture I took the other day. So here it is. Not sure but I think the Aunt was even more excited then the kids lol.

Re: R2-D2 foam build. Just had first public outing!!..

Sounds like an awesome experience, and a great pic! Looks like you'd have to see it in person, from a couple feet away, to know it was a foam build. Excellent work!

Thanks man.
The JK teacher sent me copies of the photos she took of her class the day R2 came to school. Enjoy.
