It happened with Tony Dow too. When they jump the gun and redact the story, it usually means they are knocking at deaths door. I suspect his family was told “he is in his final hours”, and someone in his camp leaked that, but it was interpreted as if he already passed.

He was absolutely on that trajectory, but when it became public that he had married his 13 year old 1st cousin (once removed), Myra Brown, when he was either 21 or 22, it tarnished his image a bit. Ironically, it wasn't because of her age necessarily, but his being married that stopped his big push. The publicity machine had a hard time trying to push a married man as a teeny bopper heartthrob.
