Update: Line template for notches on page 2

I've been wanting one of these things, but can't afford to get the MR ones, so I decided to do a cheap version.
I bought clear acrylic ornament holders from Michael's arts and crafts store and a wood ball that fit inside it.
I then drew and scribed the lines with the edge of a small file and slowly filed until I got the depth that I wanted.
I drilled a hole using my dremil, and cut out the notches.
The wooden ball had a hole already in it, I just made it deeper and wider to fit my LED (same size used for Boba Gauntlets).
I also drilled 3 holes on each side and attached half of a necklace closure in each hole.
Painted with 18k gold, added black lines, and weathered with a brown/grey acrylic wash.
A couple of hours of work and Voila. :lol
I just need to scratch build the thumb switch on the top and I have a pretty cool looking detonator.
Here are the before and after pics.

Thanks guys :thumbsup
I think this will stand out a lot more once I build the switch for the top.
Yeah, I'm sure most of us here at this time need some cheap projects until we can afford some major props.

Sector 7G - I tried looking for Ice cream scoops and could never find the right ones :(
I'd love to see pics if you have them.

Ely

sure its in a box somewhere i'll dig it out and snap a couple, the scoops are still available at Meijer stores for $7.48 ea ( i just checked while i was over there)

Mine isn't finished I still need to paint it and I made a thumb trigger for it out of sculpy that I planned on molding and making a rubber one.

Great, I'd love to see it and maybe I'll try that method as well.

I scratch built the trigger out of sculpey (took almost as long as making the ball itself :angry ) and here's the final look of it:

I dont know much about Star Wars...

but thats some great engineering there. Good creativity.

Then why are you here??

Just curious as to what lured you here?

looks fantastic, bud wish i could manage that. one thing i might of done though and this is probably because i own one of the MR peices is i would of gone more Chrome, and maybe blotched the gold on in random places.

The genesis of many fine scratch-uilt replicas.

Please remember this is NOT a Star Wars forum.

The RPF began its life as a SWfans.net forum but quickly evolved into other areas of props and costumes. While Star Wars is certainly a top draw to RPFrs, the forum encompasses all films and television shows.

Nice detonator, BTW. :thumbsup

BRAVO.... :thumbsup

Great project. It looks terrific and the price is right. I'll be heading out to the craft stores this week for supplies to repeat this process myself.

Thanks for posting this.

Wow, thanks for all the comments guys :$

I roughly measured this and the outer diameter is 2 3/8 inches (2.375")I'm already thinking about doing another one and putting a hollow ball in the center so I could put some electronics in.
I know how to sequence some LED's and the red one seems to just stay lit when the switch is on.
Regarding painting, I might use supermetallic brass next time, just because I think the gold is a little too dark after weathering.

Wow, nice looking detonator.. job well done.

Will also be popping to the craft shops too....
