Quick question on TDK Ledger joker bust.

just a realy quick question guys. What would you use to colour the eye areas on a Heath Ledger Joker bust. Ive seen some people use f lat black but there seems to be some lighter colours used.

Isn't it simply that the makeup is rubbing off and showing the underlying white and skin color through the black?
