Question about Predator dreads

Has there ever been a source that went into any real detail about the predator dreads? Such as what they are, or if they serve any purpose? Do we know if it's essentially hair, or is this just an assumption based on it being on the head? If they're part of the body, does blood run through them?

I read once that the dreds are actually a part of skin on the preds.

Getting them done is a part of a ritual for young hunters... before they hunt .....

When they reach a certain age getting them becomes a rite of passage.
It's supposed to be a painfull process he or she must remain perfect and still while they are being made,
if the pred exhibits any type of gesture or verbalizes any type of pain while they are being done. it's stopped and they must do it over at another time.

i think it was ALIEN VS PREDATOR WAR. that i read it, because machido had survived the first novel and become a huntress. it's been a while though
