Q: 1900s wooden crate filler?

I have looked around online for about 3 hours now without any answer to this question. I'm hoping someone here can help.

Can anyone tell me what the common materials were for wooden crate filler in the early 1900s - 1950s?

If you can cite a reference I would be a very happy person!

At a guess, I would say straw, for the early part of the century.

Excelsior can usually be found at craft stores.
I recently bough some at JoAnn's Fabric and Craft store.

Wood wool was what I was envisioning, but not a single search mentioned it by name. I'm sure I'll have more luck finding it now that I know what it's called!
