Pulse Rifle - Display

LOL...you know, I don't know how so many people do projects and then do them 100x over to sell them to interested people. Just as when I did my Maverick helmet, I feel like this was totally worth it and fun...but I'm never going to do it again...lol...

Hey though, check out how nicely the green paint that I used works with the PR:

...I think it's Miller time...lol...

Oh! One more funny bit, I think I must have checked the spelling of SULACO about 5 times to make sure I didn't make some sort of dumb spelling mistake. :lol

Perfectionist at it's finest. Double checking a double check.:lol
It looks really good. I like the stencil work as it does give it a "real" look. Military is all about slabbing on a label or spray painting on something. So that will do great. That green is really nice. I might have to pick up a can. Looking good.

-Andrew

....not perfectionist...well maybe a little...but more so a guy who knows that spelling is one of his deficiencies!!!

...and for some reason I kept wanting to flip the A and the C around...lol...

Oh I would have been piiiised if I had messed that up!!! LOL!!

For anyone interested, these are the 3 paints that I chose for this project:

All flat colors. I have to admit, after using the Rusto for my Top Gun helmet project and now this one, I'm really impressed with the off the shelf paints they make.

I really like RustO for a quick off the shelf pick up. I did a L.A. Stallions Helmet with RustO. Came out pretty good for me doing my first prop with only sketches on blue painters tape. thank you for a close up shot on the Paint. I need to grab that Camouflage.

-Andrew

Sure thing! And you should know - I'm NOT a pro painter. In fact this is only my second paint related project.

If you never saw my TG project, check out what RUSTO can REALLY (and it was my first EVER replica project not to mention painting):

After doing this, I think I'm ready to pick up where I left off on that thread!!

Oh, and on a side note, since I know you guys are eagerly waiting to see how this all comes together, here's a little hint of something else that I didn't show you yet:

Wouldn't be a proper ALIENS display without some caution tape!! LOL!!

You have to have the caution tape. In my head for some reason I had a row of lights on each side going off one at a time like a run way. While I wait for more update. I'll soak in your TP Thread.

-Andrew

Oh yeah , caution tape, my wife did the same thing when I was building my pulse rifle and cursing alot over a year, my wife applied caution tape on the garage door , just in case ,......wait for it,......I blew up....lol.......
Dave , the caution tape is a wonderful idea, gives the feel of , the LV426 structure ...great idea buddy, its gonna be BAD-TO-THE-BONE........, can I have it ??? lol.......cant wait to see more now.....OH YEAH.....

Hey guys! So I didn't get home until late, but still wanted to work on my display a little, so I got frame installed and secured to the back board. In previous posts I mentioned having left out a few pieces that you hadn't seen yet, and these corner brackets that I painted were 4 of them!

They started out looking like this:

But I painted them with the flat black and figured that not only would they add to the military look and feel, but also clean up the boarder where the frame pieces come together.

Here's where I left things tonight:

The center piece and name plate are just sitting on the display at the moment. I'll probably get the raised center piece installed tomorrow.

Have a great night! :thumbsup

I think Eagle's display is still my favorite, but I really like where yours is headed. :thumbsup One of these days I'll get around to making something for my Matsuo PR. Maybe I'll "borrow" a few of your ideas too. :D Keep up the good work.

Cool looking display so far. I like it. I also see you see you used the Rustoleum Camo Green. That's what I used to paint the PR in my avatar with. It's a very nice color for the PR.

Thanks everyone! The more I look at the mass produced displays made in recent years, the more I like building my own.

Last night when I started to look at the yellow and black tape that I had purchased I discovered that it's got creases in it very few inches where it was folded onto itself for packaging...thus rendering it unusable...so I'll be looking for alternatives this afternoon.

Also - I had some inspiration last night regarding lighting....and I'll be testing that idea this evening too!!

Custum displays are the way to go. I know I shocked everyone when I showed off my wooden display stand (my avatar). People were like, "it's nice, but not very "ALIEN" like".

I wanted more of a classy display for mine. And yes, I'll be doing something similar for my next PR!

Display is looking great. I agree with you on the "building your own" display. I think it adds more character to the display when the user is making it him/herself. It also lets the owner appreciate it that much more. For the caution tape couldn't you let some flat books with weight sit on it to flatten it out? Or throw a towel over it, and try to iron it? It might dry the adhesive, but you could use the spray glue/tack. Just an idea. Or just throw throw on some painters tape using your caution tape as a reference, and paint your own caution tape.

Can't wait to see this bad boy finished.

Sparco Marking/Hazard Tape, Adhesive-Back, 2 x 108-Feet, Yellow/Black (SPR11794) - Amazon.com

Or you could always paint instead of using tape. It would be a pain though, but it's an option.

Thanks for the link to the hazard tape - that's probably what I'll buy at a store here in town. I considered working with what I have but it's vinyl tape, and the creases are pretty significant and would never be nice and smooth like I want. Thankfully I didn't buy a whole bunch of that stuff!!!

Painting the hazard lines isn't really a feasible option for me - I want the edges and lines nice and crisp, and I doubt that I could get those results with my current painting skills - good suggestion though!!

And as displays go, it's all personal preference - be it classy or themed from the movie. It's the personal touch that I think is really slick!

I like the personal touch of a self made. Not all are a like. It's just like military graffiti on vehicles or clothing. It's the mans touch, and character on his item. I can't wait to see the caution tape on it once you get it.

-Andrew

Thanks!

Yeah, after just getting a visual of what it would look like with the hazard tape really made it 'pop'. It's the combination of the stencils, the colors, and the tape that just looks awesome!

So next items on the list are -

Lighting Testing/drilling/etc...
Installation of Wall Mounting brackets
Hazard Tape Application
Securing the center piece
Mounting the gun rack

And Done!

...unless something else comes up!!
