Pulse Rifle - Display

Hey Everyone! Just a quick update for those who are following this thread. I woke up to a very chilly 22 degree morning and only going for a high today in the low 40s. I inspected the pieces that I painted yesterday and a few of them needed some touch up and a couple needed a second coat. So I setup a 'drying zone' in my living room!! Fortunately it's not windy this morning so I can run out, spray, and bring the pieces in to dry. With any luck, all the pieces will be dry and I'll be able to begin assembly this afternoon! I'll post pics as I begin the next step!
 
Excellent. I was going to head to Home Depot today to grab some things. Went outside to 29 degrees. I walked right back inside. I can't wait to see the progression.

I know!! BONE COLD!!!!

I have one last coat to put on the back board of the display to make sure that black is as even as I can get it, once I spray that, I'm taking a break for a couple hours so by....1pm, I can move to the next step!!

While I'm excited to keep this going, I don't want to rush it!!!

Glad to see that my project has motivated you to do a display too! While I love my PR...I don't love it as the center piece of my dining room table...lol...
 
It's always fun to begin a project, and to see it through. You are absolutely correct for not wanting to rush. It's far too easy to make a mistake. Keep up the great work boss.

Thanks Guy! Just saw them! I'll probably do something along those lines! Looks good.

So here's a little teaser for you guys as I get ready to do the stenciling!

At this point nothing is secured and is just in mock-up. I took measurements thought to make sure that the center raised section was where I wanted it to be so that I could mark it, remove it and then do the stencils.

Oh! And as that was a teaser, I left about 8 pieces out of the picture!! LOL!!
 
Well...I feel like a bit of a donkey at the moment....

So here's how I prepared the stencils for spray:

I took everything outside, turned the board upside down for ease of spraying....and totally underestimated the range of over spray...

...so needless to say after I saw the white over spray getting areas that I DID NOT want white paint...I covered them up...but I think I'm going to have to do a mist coat of black to fix my mistake...

stupid mistake....(shakes head and feels like and idiot)....

So after applying the first coat here's how things look:

Probably going to hit it again with one more coat of white.

We've all made simple mistakes. Don't be to hard on yourself. I'm coming up with ideas to make a display for my PREDATOR collection I'm trying to grow.

Yeah...I know...this just irritated me a little...especially since the next step would have been drilling and securing all the pieces together.


You'll have to start a display thread for your collection/project too!
 
Almost at the finish line, and then a small trip to slow it down. I can't wait to see your finished piece. I'm thinking of buying a few Airsoft Rifles to make a nice weapon rack for the Team in the first PREDATOR. I'm working on Billy's costume.

If you dont make mistakes big buddy, you will never learn to perfect it, there are so many props , you can do things like this for, however, little mistakes sometimes make it come out alot better than you expected because you end up getting very cautious ,even more so , now than before ....especially when you pour all your love and heart into it, its going to be frakkin' great.....I really like what I am seeing, so your work is impressive with your idea coming to life....cant wait to see more....I am so looking forward to this even more now, keep up the fantastic work, looks awesome......Guy

I was just kidding when I said , you need to hurry up....:lol:lol:lol.......take your time and keep us in suspense.....(y)lol....if you want to send the display base to me once you finish it, to uuhhhhh,hmmmm......make sure its fine, I will give you my address......:love....:lol

ok..so as the sun was setting, I carefully covered the still wet stencils and flipped over the sheets that I'd taped together for coverage and fixed the over spray problem with a light coat of black on the affected area.

I think the smart thing to do now is to wait until tomorrow to start doing any sort of assembly work so that I can be sure that all the paint has fully dried.
 
OK...I couldn't help myself and I went ahead and unwrapped everything to see how it turned out:

I wasn't sure what to think at first. Using stencils isn't the easiest thing from what I read, and the fact that it's not super sharp and super crisp around all the letter edges (I think) makes it look more natural and more 'real'.

Bottom line - I think I like it! LOL!!
