Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!! CASE CLOSED 5/18/09

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

I generally have had a positive experience with UPS, although they did lose one of my orders much to my displeasure. Good luck with the claim, they owe you for sure!

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

Thanks for the support everyone. UPS is supposed to be sending someone out to the owners house to inspect the package and do an "investigation". Someone is supposed to get back with me.We will see what they say. Fingers crossed........

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

I used to work with someone whose son ran the Fedex insurance division.

It is located in the Bahamas. THAT should tell you something...

I have also known people who used to work at UPS and have told me their stories.

Ok, ready?

ALL (as in ALL) shipping insurance is a scam. Legal...but a scam.

Fedex takes in 20 million per month in insurance fees but pays out less than 2 million. I am sure UPS and USPS are in the same league or close.

I have only had a couple of packages damaged and I had to use the insurance. I immediately got someone out to the recipient's home and promptly received the "improperly packaged" line.

Anyone who has received one of our packages knows that we pack our stuff like a tank.

Now, some people are dummies and pack things in a horrible manner. And UPS, Fedex, et al are COUNTING on it. They will never get the insurance claim.

Essentially, they only reimburse the people who really put up a fight. You have to understand that this is a major profit center for them and they already KNOW ahead of time how many claims will be reimbursed each month. (and how many WON'T). The loss rate is pretty steady and they can project it very well after doing this for such a long time.

Good luck. We are all counting on you.

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

I'm willing to bet that sometimes it doesn't even matter how well they pack the box. Big companies with large contracts are more likely to get their claims than a smaller place or a single person. Caterpillar and Mopar have some of the worst packaging I've seen. They're sending machine parts in simple carboard boxes with nothing more than some plastic wrap as packing material. The weight of the parts combined with traveling through the miles of automated systems is enough in and of itself to destory the thin little cardboard boxes they use. In other words, they pack like idiots. But, I bet when they have a claim, they'll get their money. Because they're a larger source of revenue and they "must be appeased".

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

I know it was packed good. any tips or tricks I can use on UPS? I'm starting to get the feeling I'm going to get screwed on this innsurance. Matt told me that if I do get the claim that UPS may sieze the gun as well. Matt has offered to help the best he can. This may be rebuilt for the owner which would be great as he would rather have the PR.

So far it looks like the whole resin spas cage needs replacement and the right side of the shroud. Not sure about the left side of the shroud. Thank goodness it was based off a stripped airsoft and not a resin Thompson.

:cry

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

If your asking for the total value yes they will take the model.

IF you only asking for the costs of repairs you should be able to keep the model.

I have a model damaged and filed a clame for the repairs and shipping both ways for the repairs and got it.

Of couse it was under 50% of the full value, I figure like car ajusters, over 50% of value is totaled...

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

Improperly packed?

Do they ever supply any kind of guidelines that says how it should be packed?

I mean, if it's supposed to be packed a certain way, shouldn't they be telling people? Otherwise it would seem they wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

The funny thing is, there is a website that you can go to for info on correctly packing your packages. It's right there on your reciept, that they hand you after you just shipped your box....... :confused

I bet if you followed their guidelines to the letter, they would still tell you that you packed it wrong.

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

Yeah, during the claim process they would update the "website" and still tell you it was packed wrong.:lol

I've not dealt with US mail services but the improperly packaged line is definately something i've heard of regarding parcelforce in the UK.
And no the guidelines don't appear to be available anywhere online or at the post office.
One person i know recieved a box containing some fibreglass armour smashed in two, bubblewrapped, packed in poly chips, sturdy box, marked fragile, this way up, the full works, parcelforce said the package wasn't packed properly because it had less than a 6" layer of bubblewrap around the item.

Hope you get your money back though Robiwan.

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

I use to work for UPS..and they are a joke..as far a package handling..and if ANY box says fragile..those realy get beat up on purpose by the handlers..they pack these trailers top to bottom like tetris and the only way to get to the boxes at the top of the wall is to pull a few out from the middle and they all come tumbling down..its a joke..boxes are tossed around..stepped on..smashed...retaped....I never wanted to deal with a claim..so I would always double box everything...1-2 inches of packing penuts in the first box and then another 2-3 inch of packing penuts in the big box..yea it cost a bit..but for items of importance..it cant be debated that the extra cost for the packing materials and the shipping charge is worth the hassle..heartache and anger..

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

Damn :confused I had no idea about how they packaged and handled these things, I'll be sure to take extra care shipping stuff out now. Again, good luck with the claim.

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

I don't think handlers beat up fragile boxes on purpose. At least not all of them. There are jerks everywhere of coarse.

The tetris thing is acurate. That's how they describe packing even, like tetris. It's all about getting as much down during a shift as possible. Most of the time a packages well being is less important that getting your cargo can or trailer loaded or unloaded.

In my area, we relabel stuff. Either the system didn't read it, it was damaged, whoever sent it was a moron, etc. Belts drop stuff down chutes and onto big metal slides where they wait to be tended to and corrected. In another part they drop down chutes onto a belt that circles around until they can be gotten to. It creates lots of potential damage situations. Especially when badly packaged machine parts or stupidly large or heavy boxes come down. They come down with enough force to literally crush small boxes and peoples limbs potentialy, so one must stay on their toes. If our belt jams up, we'll do whatever it takes to get it un-jammed because having it stop is a no no. Maintenance does the same thing all around the building. It's not really about your packages in the end. Its about how many they can shove in and out in a 4 hour shift. Warning labels, sensors, orrientation arrows, fagile stickers, they don't mean jack. The system doesn't care, and more often than not, we're too busy to care.

My advice if you MUST ship UPS (I mean we do have awesome tracking if nothing else) is to pack it like you expect it to be thrown down a flight of stairs then have someone jump down the stairs and dive bomb it. Also, tape it very very well. Make sure there are no other labels and that all your information is correct. Try very hard, no to hand write your label. It will almost always go to Excpetion (my area). If you box comes down there its more likely to be harmed in the gauntlet than in any other area. Theres a reason they neglect to talk about the area in tours and on TV shows. It's where bad things happen the worst.

The PR, which is a real shame to see busted up like that, either got caught in a jam or got hit by something heavy, I would say. Even the most ruthless loader or unloader will rarely go out of their way to destroy something to that degree.

To give an idea of how nasty some of the jams are, I've seen UPS break a high strength polymer gun part. This part was so strong that it could be beaten with a sledge hammer, run over, and parked upon by a 2 ton truck and still function without more than a scratch to its exterior. Somehow one of them arrived with a hole punched through it. Now that, is some scarey stuff. :wacko

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

UPS called me a few months ago and tried to get me to pay customs/tax with my credit card for a package that they hadn't delivered yet. I hadn't even seen it! The dude on the phone acted like it was the most obvious thing i the world for me to do. Needless to say, I told the guy that I wasn't paying a dime until I SAW the package in person. Then they also have the nerve to add a "collection fee" for the customs/tax that is 33 freakin' percent higher than the regular post office.

USPS have always been good to me, as has the regular Swedish post office. The few times I've had to file insurance claims the SWPO have paid up without question.

Add one more guy rooting for you to get reimbursed- don't let 'em screw you over.

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

If it is something delicate or valuable and if it HAS TO go through UPS, I take it to the UPS store and let them pack it. Then, if I have a damage claim they can't allege I packed it poorly. Actually, my local UPS store is quite good and helpful. They packaged a metal diving helmet for me to send to the manufacturer for some work. It got damaged enroute and the local store helped file the claim. I got full restitution, etc. with no headaches.

It may cost a little more (not that much) to have the UPS store pack it, but it prevents any hassles with damage claims. At least that's been my experience.

Hope things work out for the beautiful pulse rifle.

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

Saddened to see the photos of the damage to the terrific PR you built, Robiwon. :(

I hope that UPS will reimburse your buyer for repairs and allow him to keep the PR.

Also, I'd like to offer a suggestion to the mods:

In addition to being a thread about Robiwon's PR, this thread has come to include an increasing amount of useful information about UPS and other shippers, shipping insurance, packing procedures, etc. In particular I have been impressed by the "inside information" offered by our members who are employees or former employees of these shipping companies.

I wonder if it might be helpful eventually to archive this thread, or parts of it, under a title related to shipping and insurance caveats.

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

Temponaut, I agree, there has been a lot of useful info posted in here about shipping, claims, etc. With all the rare, expensive, and often irreplaceable items being sold here and other places I think archiving might be a good idea. If any Mod wants to pick out the high and low points or do the whole thread or whatever, I'm cool with that. If it can save someone else from the headaches I've had over the last two weeks it will be worth it!

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

That rifle was a work of art! Love the wood stand and how it was like a presentation piece! So sorry to see what happened to it. :(

I stopped using UPS long ago except when I absolutely had to for BIG boxes. I've seen how their drivers handle items first hand and it's outrageous. I only use USPS now as I've had very good luck with them in regards to taking care of fragile packages as well as insurance claims on damaged ones. FedEx I've used only a few times, no overall complaints, but when the SW Fan Club was having issues that's when I became wary of them.

Re: Pulse Rifle - DESTROYED BY UPS!!!

I just got a PM from the owner of my PR. He states UPS will be out today to pick up the package for inspection. At this point, both he and I would rather have the PR rebuilt rather than hand it over to UPS. I was surprised they were coming out to take it to inspect it. I thought they would do it there at the owners house.:confused
