Proton Pack and Trap Mark 2

Re: Proton Gun Mark 2

Just wanted to say thanks for the support folks :). It does mean allot...especially considering how badly the budget pack turned out as my first ever attempt into prop building something BIG :).

Yesterday, we finally got access to the cone drill again, and drilled the crank generator tube down a bit so the hose could properly fit in without glue. Today, we'll drill in the hole for the light battery to stick through, and see about adding more battery power for the speaker. I am still not sure why the amp didn't work. We have 4 AA's powering it, and 4AA's powering the sound chip last time, and it worked perfectly (albeit a little on the static side). This time around, we got nothing with the same setup. That's why I ditched the little amplifier board and just hooked the speaker up direct. It's loud, but not lough enough as to be annoying if I where to wear this thing to a party or something.. :).

The only thing left to do is await the arrival of the bumper, which should be here around the first half of November. will gladly wait for quality :)...

Re: Proton Gun Mark 2

The batteries are all accessable via the back of the MB. THe speaker is secured by screws and washers so it doesn't fall off somehow.

for all intents and purposes, this thing is ready for halloween, minus the bumper. Too bad I have no place to wear it too..

Re: Proton Gun Mark 2

the new bumper is on it's way..should get here next week or Friday at the earliest....final shots coming soon :)

This week, the final assembly begins.. With my new Nick-A-Tron bumper, probably put on reverse here ;o)....I can now begin sanding, priming and painting the final part. but first is to draw out the dead center for the other piece that is on the top.

Today, we also corrected the Activate Switch sticker and put it in it's proper spot. The new sticky paper I got for this process works rather well for these purposes. Lets just hope it sticks..

Things left to do.
-Re drill holes for booster so it's dead center and stable.
- More firmly attach Ion Arm piece by filling in the hole in the center then gluing and screwing in place. Right now it's just attached by three screws.
- print out final stickers. I fixed the gun, I added the one for the NFilter that is missing in this pic.
-remove excess glue from hose on pack.

After that, it SHOULD be all done...

The other thing to work on will be this.. The problem with everyone measuring clothes different, is that it messes you up when the item arrives. In this case, XX might be a tad big on me. Looks more like a 4X

All 5 remaining holes drilled. Just needs major sanding, maybe one more bit of black primer, more sanding and a final paint.

Also tommorow, the Apoxie Sculpt clay will have hardened inside of the Ion Arm attachment, allowing us to drill in more direct screws for better holding, and glue it onto the top with the the screws in when all is said and done.

Hopefully final pictures tommorow....as I try to make this look as pretty as possible :)

Re: Proton Gun Mark 2

just goes to show ya, it's always something :). I finally got everything looking as good as I could make it look...

Today I straightened out the top piece of the ion arm so it wasn't so crooked. I painted the remaining elbow pieces a sort of grey, since no one really had the right color. I suck at painting and sanding, so I got the bumper looking as good as possible and re-drilled the holes so everything fits properly. The Ion Arm is now secured with glue and 3 giant screws.....

The Missing N Filter sticker is now in place, the Gun Activate sticker is now above the switch......

Everything was finally in place and then....the paint chipped off the booster frame. Now I've got to make that look good before I can consider this project done :).

Tomorrow, final pictures with uniform..

Re: Proton Gun Mark 2

Stupid question, but is there any way to attach the patch and nametag to the uniform other than sewing? :)

NOW we are done... yes, I could re-sand the bumper so it looks a little nicer. as well as the booster frame. but for what I will use it for, and how many times it will get used, it is good enough that the average person will not care about the problems :)

Maybe one day I will make that bumper look better, but for the life of me, I can not sand it down good enough so that the paint comes out smooth...my spray paint skills are none existent :).

The Ion Arm is now straight, instead of crooked. The Ribbon cable is now tucked away so it doesn't slide out.

I finally got around to putting the proper hat light on the front...even though I liked how it looked better with the other light cap on it.

Back in the construction stage, I had to reconstruct most of the gun window so it fit the new light bar. I also repainted the handle so it didn't have the splotches all over it.

$900's later and 5 months of sweat and work....it's all finally done. Just have to sew the real uniform together....

- on monday, we will try and straighten out the booster so it's dead center. we'll reposition the ribbon cable so it's twisted to look a little better. AND we'll take the bumper off and try to make it look a little nicer. I'll also bring in the old sewing kit and fix up the real uniform.

If I ever do a pack and trap mark 3, I've got all the bugs worked out now, minus the painting :).

Re: Proton Gun Mark 2

Today's mission...

Take out three tap screws holding booster in place. Glue booster perfectly straight, re-drill holes, and hopefully perfectly straight booster.

Reposition ribbon cable so it's a tad closer.....not sure if I still have any of that apoxy clay left, but it'd work to fill in the hole.

Fix Bumper so it looks at least a LITTLE nicer.

Hopefully all done by 4, and we'll have something a tad closer to movie accurate :).

Bumper is now perfectly straight. I've got to take it off and try and fix up the paint job next.
Booster is not perfectly straight. Have to have a second hand to keep it flat while I screw in the screws.... The Ribbon cable holder was moved over 5 inches or less to make sure that it's closer to movie accurate. I also drilled a hole for the wires that power the sound chip so they run through the back rather than out the side...

I've just gotta repaint the booster frame, which keeps on chipping off paint..and I've gotta fix up the bumper, and it'll finally perfectly be done.

NOW it's all set. The only thing that could really use tweaking is the bumper paint job, and the blasted ribbon cable twisting, which I can't seem to get to stay in the same spot I want it to stay.....

Now the only question is, do we need a Mark 3 pack and trap? :)

Re: Proton Gun Mark 2

Lastly, the uniform. I got the nametag sort of sewed on. At least it stays :). The Logo is a different matter. any other ways to get these things to stick? :)

Re: Proton Gun Mark 2

Pack came out nice.

If you want your ribbon cable to stay nice and tightly wrapped use some small white zip ties. They barely show at all

And thus ends construction. The sewing on my logo fell apart and I was too annoyed to put it back into place. I'll fix it with sticky stickers..

One final entry. I got a new, non warped board from Home Depot for the base, and took another attempt for a stand. I'm drilling and screwing the things into place. I'm going to place two more pieces to the left and right and two more rods to help balance the pack at the back.

I might paint it, but for now I'm just trying to get it to be stable :)

Re: Proton Gun Mark 2

Today, we used every left over dowel rod from the project and finished the stand. It may not look pretty, but it'll work. I didn't feel like braving route ten christmas traffic to get two more square rods to match the one in the middle.

It's now primed and ready for final black paint tomorrow. I was thinking of looking for hooks to attach for even more stability, but if I do that it'll wait till after the holidays...

Re: Proton Gun Mark 2

Not bad at all - but you will want to go back and clean up that bumper.
Sand it down using multiple grit sandpapers then primer, wetsand and re-spray.
When using spray paint, keep it about 6 - 8" away and spray in sweeping motions.
Keep the can moving to avoid paint runs and respray areas for further coats after the paint has had a minute to "tack" up.

Re: Proton Gun Mark 2

Believe me my friend, lots of people have tried to school me on the lessons of spray paint. For whatever reason, for whatever technique I try that people suggest, I just can't get the right amount of pressure for it to look good. Eventually I will go back and fix the bumper though. But I'm going to let someone else spray paint it :)...
