Propstore "screen matched" TOS Tricorder

While the middle compartment looks suspect the rest of the Tricorder looks correct to me. The screen matching also looks good. I think it’s possible, for whatever reason, the original prop was modified later.

But this does look authentic to my eye.
It might be, yet in the state it's in it shouldn't even be up for auction.

The guy in the video even made the claim that the Tricorder going up for auction was the exact same one Leonard Nimoy stored the loly pop sticks in and that the first season tricorders only had blue indicator lights.

Even if it is real there's just too much of a risk as it clearly wasn't properly authenticated.

To some degree I'm insulated from making a really big mistake because real or fake this particular item is WAY out of my price range.

So I'm confident in my armchair expert opinion that there's more right about this than wrong. Honestly, I think that if that center compartment was glued shut and no one was able to see that funky middle section I think more opinions would be that this is authentic. I think that center section is a bit of a red herring.

I have not seen this in person but I was shown pics months ago and thought it was solid based solely on those pics. The piece got a pretty good shot in DOTD which shows one very good detail that fakes never get right - the crystal colors. The first crystal is a redish/lavender-ish kind of thing (I’m sure there’s a specific name for that color but I don’t know what it is) and the piece in question nails that subtlety. What absolutely threw me into a tailspin, though, was the interior for all the reasons we know of and I told Brandon of my concerns. That said, if the interior is indeed using known Jim Kirk materials then - though strange - it answers my concerns. I only have images from a single JK comm on file and the disc doesn’t look anything like the Tric one. But I only have the one. I assume others are better informed about such things.

I cannot name one other Tric replica that comes close to fooling anyone with basic knowledge of these things. But this thing is accurate in so many ways. All the hood detail looks absolutely right, especially when compared to its twin that was sold back in 2006. I think it is likely to be real.

BTW, anyone here have a shot of a JK disc for comparison?

BTW2, the propstore guy practically quoted me right up to the point he started saying stupid stuff. So obviously they know NOTHING about these pieces that someone else (me) doesn’t teill them. But that is irrelevant to me. Either a piece stands on its own or it doesn’t. I think this one does.

Cool tricorder. Looks like the hood is made out of metal? And those vari vue swirl moires were popular in the 60's so it is
possible it is original but who knows.

IF that was the original moire' we would have at least seen something of in in the third season .....

I have come to realize that whether or not the disc is the same as a JK disc misses the point. The disc itself appears to be the infamous “Hypno-Coin” made famous in every comic book printed in the ‘60’s and certainly would have been available to prop-makers in 1968 which I think gives some slight credence to the possibility that they could well be original to the prop. But given that apparently JK actually used the HC disc in his own TRICS (not just Comms), that makes me lean in the “after-market” direction, whoever the actual modifier might have been. The bottom line is that the source of the guts is simply unknowable - it might be original or it might be (probably was?) added later but either way it’s irrelevant to me. The exterior speaks for itself. My doubt has turned into likelihood.

JK Tric with the Hypno-Coin and ‘disc’ row. It’s worth noting that NOTHING ELSE on this build resembles the auction Tric including the framing around the details.

I never really cared too much for the “leatherette” Tricorders, before, but I find myself really wanting to take a crack at replicating this one (not the current one up for auction…the other one):

Someone needs to—nicely—contact the auction host from Prop Store and let him know—respectfully—that the original Hero Tricorders, created by Wah Chang, WERE NOT covered in leather; the black panels were made from vacuformed hair cell Kydex (as we all know, here, of course):

He has stated that the Chang Heroes were leather in both this video and the other video by Tested. He is correct in his statement that there were two “leatherette” Tricorders created for Season 3 (as far as we know).

Yeah, that annoyed me too.

Those guys have a podcast "Stuff Dreams are Made of" - Hollywood bigwigs with way more money than knowledge...
Their kind of painful to listen to
