Prop Dimensions

Hello Prop Builders,

I am interested in making some beginner props, and thought I would try making a sonic screwdriver (if you have simpler project suggestions, I welcome them). I am wondering how you go about finding the dimensions of the props you build. For the sonic screwdriver I have made a guess at the overall length from a picture and then for each piece measured pixel ratios to see how long it should be. This is kind of working, but I'm not sure it is the best method. Any help and tips are appreciated!

If you want to start small and just get the hang of prop building, this one is easy and kind of ok...
It is by no means screen acurate.
