"Prop Culture" series on Disney+

I LOVE the concept, and seeing the props up close with the actors, telling their stories, just great. But the host is definitely not my favorite. He’s friends with Adam Savage and has an amazing collection, but he has all these props on lockdown. He’s never posted anything online about them, and has hundreds of one of a kind items with little reference on them. I honestly have so much sadness about this because it feels like flipping the bird to everyone else who doesn’t have the money to buy the items and flexing the fact that he’s the one who owns them and he can do what he wants with them.

If he took a day going through his collecting taking pictures of 6 angles of each prop, he would basically make the RPF into the Online Prop Dictionary, but he doesn’t want to. It just makes me really really sad that Disney put that guy front and center to lead their show, and so many people won’t even know that this guy isnt all he's cracked up to be. (Also how he always acts like he’s “discovering” things, like, come on man, the prop was in the Disney Archives with 50 other iconic light up signs, anyone can “discover” that)

Thanks for reading my rant, sorry about that.

I've never understood why it's an issue that someone does what they want with their property. None of us are owed the right to see these things

Same reason someone can be a storyteller, tell the story THEY came up with & want to tell, but then fans insist that it's "wrong", or better yet, decide to ignore parts of it because it's not what they wanted...& I'll be the first to admit that I'm like that to an extent.

I've always thought Dan was stingy with props to reduce the possibility of counterfiting in the high-end prop world.

Case in point...

I don’t understand the anger. It’s his property, he can do what he wants. Do any famous high profile collectors have extensive content online? Peter Jackson, Bob Burns etc. No

Thanks! Yes, I've worked at Laika since the production of ParaNorman - this August it will be 10 years.
That’s awesome, do you have any knowledge about what happens to the props after the movies are made? I only ask because I’ve never seen any in private collections.

Generally, most of the stuff goes into the Laika archives. There are several display units out on the stages at the studio for tours & promotional purposes, and there are also small displays in the lobby, etc.

There actually *was* an auction of items from Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls back in 2015:

Heritage Auctions Search, 2015 February 12 The Art of Laika Studios Animation Art Including Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls Signature Auction - Beverly Hills 7129 [3185 790 231 4294953327]

They give you stuff as crew gifts though, right? I thought they handed out Paranorman faces as gifts.

Maybe Dan could do an episode on the Laika archives. One of my dream props is one of the Yeti guards from Missing Link

I just think its really sad that all these people own fantastic and iconic film props and chose nt to document them. If anyone on this site had any of those props, I feel like they'd deffintely take the time to help others and to show off what they've got at the same time. I feel like its really absurd to spend all that money on amazing things, talk about your love of the items, and not show them in detail.

Not absurd at all. It's their money, their property, and there are multiple reasons why they may not wish to publicly show them off like that.

1) It stops people from being able to replicate these things, then passing them off as genuine when they are not.

2) Their collecting is their personal hobby, and so they wish to keep their private lives, you know, private.

They are also under no obligation to show their private property to anyone, regardless of how much of their money they spent on those things. In fact how much they paid is entirely irrelevant really. To think otherwise, strikes me as a feeling of real entitlement.

You're new here, so clearly haven't been around long enough to know this, but quite a few members here own very rare film/tv props, that they don't show off here. Brandon owns the actual V2 saber prop and restricts how and when it has been publicly seen, as is his right. Of course other respected members have seen it, held it, and even measured it, but that was entirely up to Brandon.

The rpf is not the world. We being extreme movie prop fanatics are in the vast minority. Showing off every mm of your props in perfect pictures is no more “right” than hoarding them away and never showing anybody.

Loved watch this series. Reminded me and fortified my interest and love for film making.
