Re: Paper prop Thread

I really never thought of it as a Bible in the movie. Why would Indy carry around a Bible, let alone one that big?

Because it is an important plot point. If you'll notice in the film, there is a cut right after Indy asks Marcus "What do they wanna see me for? What, am I in trouble?" Indy does pick up the "book" when he leaves his classroom, but he only carries it and his briefcase into the lecture hall to meet with the Army Intel. guys. So, it could be implied that Marcus told Indy only what he knew and Indy, being the clever fellow he is, deduced that he would need his Bible and only kept it after stopping by his office...especially since the Army guys tell Indy that Hitler is looking for religious artifacts.

But none of that really has anything to do with the prop itself, which, as I stated, is widely believed to be a Bible.

Re: Paper prop Thread

yes, the Grail Diary is the cat's meow, but wouldn't it be cool to have the Big Book displayed, opened to the Ark pic, in a Donovanesque way?

Re: Paper prop Thread

[...] Anyway, he lifted the layout of the ID almost verbatim from an ID that I did way back in 1999 and posted online on my collection page:

Yeah, it sucks, and there's really nothing that I can do about it - other than bring it to everyone's attention - but it still pisses me off. I have no problem with my stuff inspiring others to be creative - that's great... as long as you put some actual work into it and come up with your own stuff. But if a guy is just gonna be a lazy **** and take ****... :angry

Wow. No offense, but I think it's going a bit far to say he ripped you off since, other than the general style, they're completely different both in proportion and content. Quite far from "almost verbatim" IMO...

Granted, it's not identical, but it's still CLEARLY copied from Timmy's ORIGINAL DESIGN. It's not like they were both interpreting a screen used design, and they both took different directions with the details. It seems clear as day that the dude took tims design, then made some changes to it.

Is not that enough to get pissed off about??

I agree. Except for the card size, the font style, the size of the fonts, the layout, the applique work, the line width, the logo, the signature bar security texture, the photographs, the body text, the fingerprint, the way it's trimmed and the lamination. Other than that the two are clearly identical.

Amirite?

Re: Paper prop Thread

I'm ok with you having your opinion about it, and that's cool. I'm sorry that you're not up for supporting a fellow RPEffer who feels his work was swiped. It's a great world we live in where people are free to express their interest in voicing a dissenting opinion rather than supporting a comrade in arms.

What's really terrifying is how much the dude in that picture looks like a guy from a Rob Zombie video. But maybe that's just me.

Re: Paper prop Thread

I hate to ruin the thread by making requests but..............

...Has anyone ever seen or made a Handbook for the recently Deceased cover from Beetlejuice? It looks simple enough to copy.

Curious myself. I know this is a long shot as I have no idea what I am talking about but could you make one from a t-shirt iron transfer to a basic book? Just a thought...

:rolleyes Whatever...

:confused Are you serious? The "proportion" is irrelevant - the layout is the same.

A blue bar across the top - the same. He could have chosen hundreds of other colors, and yet he used blue. Coincidence? Bullsh*t. Two images, side by side, below the blue bar - same layout. A box below the two images, with the information and signature divided into four sections - same layout. First, the bearer's name, centered - the same. Second, two designations, left and right, the left being "special agent" - the same. Third, two designations, left and right, left being the agent number, right being a date - exactly the ****king same, even using red for the agent number. Fourth, the signature, where he misinterpreted my blurring with a mosaic filter as a "marbelized" background for the signature - the same.

Yeah, I know... here's where you guys say "Dude, yours has FIVE sections, you're completely wrong." :rolleyes Obviously, the guy couldn't make out what it read, so he simply left that off.

Now check this out - I'm sorry I can't remember who created this, since he should be recognized for his awesome and actual creativity and work. He wasn't a lazy *******, who simply took someone else's work and just gave it a couple minor tweaks. He had an original thought, and he created something cool - a comic book style, "vintage" BPRD ID card:

See - not that difficult to be original.

Re: Paper prop Thread

:D

I made that, just before the first movie came out. Just over four years ago ... How time flies.

It is truly gratifying to be praised by you.

I must confess, however, that the layout & design is based heavily on a 1940 New York pistol license.

I'll post a hi-rez version here in a minute.

Re: Paper prop Thread

Mike, that ID card is awesome. I like it even better, knowing what it was based upon. That in no way detracts from your creativity in realizing this prop. Cheers! :)

Re: Paper prop Thread

Mike - glad you chimed in! Sorry I didn't remember that it was your work - it truly is inspired... and inspiring. Good stuff!

So were you just going through all kinds of old IDs, or was there a specific reason you pulled up a 1940s pistol license? I never would have guessed. That's really cool.

Re: Paper prop Thread

Thanks! :$

Short answer: I had that image on my hard drive, and I thought it looked good.

Long answer: As I'm sure most of us do, I collect material regarding my favorite movies, TV shows, hobbies, etc. Squirreled away on my hard drive, next to the folder for "Movies & Props" is the folder labeled "Documents & Paper Props". In there I keep all kinds of general stuff I think is useful or may be useful in the future for making replica documents or paper props. In the "Governmental" subsection is where I filed the New York ID when I first found it. I may have been doing a Google Image Search for "ID" or something like that. I do look up IDs or maps or stocks on Google Image Search from time to time - and whatever looks good, I file away for reference. When I felt compelled to make the BPRD ID, it must have struck a chord.

I have had the blank version of that on my hard drive since you originally posted back then, and couldn't remember who created it so that I could give proper credit when I used it in my Hellboy display (if I ever get around to finishing it :wacko).

Anyway, I should have know that the creator was the paper prop magician that is Sith Sheriff Brody. I have now made a note in the file name so that I will not forget that you created the blank original.

Another thank you from me to you. :)

Man, that's dedication... and it's ambitious. And smart, too :)
