The upcoming installment of the Predator franchise, called Predators, seems to have found its star. Is it some 6' 7" troglodyte with bulging biceps who can snap a man's neck with his toes? Not quite. The new face of the Predator franchise is....Adrien Brody, the Oscar-winning star of The Pianist. -- Yes, THAT Adrien Brody.
Some details were recently released about the film, which will be based on a script by Robert Rodriguez and directed by newcomer, Nimród Antal. It will take place on the never-before-visited homeworld of the Predators themselves. The toughest and meanest humans on Earth are kidnapped and taken to the planet, which serves as a giant game preserve where Man is hunted for sport by the dreadlock-sporting, technology-cheating warrior species. The group of humans will be portrayed by Alice Braga, Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins, Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Louiz Ozawa.
According to the reports, Brody's character, who is a "mercenary who tries to keep his team alive when its members are hunted by the aliens," is seemingly the de facto leader of this upstart group. He is also described as "a character close to the one that Arnold Schwarzenegger did in the 1987 original." Surely enough, the team will likely find surviving each other to be just as difficult a task as avoiding the Predators. (We call that "chemistry," folks.)
I guess we have a rather obvious question with which to work: Can Adrien Brody pull off the role of "action star?" Unless you consider 2005's King Kong or various police/detective dramas as action films, Brody, for all his accolades, is rather untested in this genre. I'm not going to say that he doesn't "have the right look" as that often has to do with our preconceived perceptions based on previous roles. (If Brody had started in action, we obviously would not be asking these questions, regardless of his look.)
If anything, this will only serve to boost the credibility of the film. I don't know about you, but the prospect of seeing an Oscar winner the caliber of Brody (in the jungle, presumably) with a huge-a** machine gun, shooting up aimlessly, blowing s**t up, while dramatically screaming in the air, is enough to pique one's curiosity. There's something very poetic about a mainstay of pretentious Oscar-fodder agitprop, loosening up the tie and following in the footsteps of The Governator and Sly Stallone.
