1st ever movie prop build. Using black walnut for initial compass. Lid is one piece that I carved/sanded to get the dome. Thinking of making it a functional compass as well.

I used black walnut since it takes a stain or oil easily, carves well, and is durable.

Its funny you put this on here i was looking on here for this, this morning.. Good Work so far keep us updated

I actually just finished my compass. Made it out of some card stock. Brushed some resin on it to make it harder and used an old Christmas ball to make the dome. It's totally ugly. But I always get satisfaction from something I made myself.

For some weird reason, I don't like the whitish color of the border so I decided to paint it a yellow-ocher color. The sundial is totally wrong, I know. I just wanted to make one to see if I can... wasn't striving for SA (obviously).

Always interesting to see how people problem solve. I look forward to see how it comes out.

I think you are being too hard on yourself. Remember what you learn now on a project helps you to make a better project later. Very creative in your use of materials.

I hope both these examples inspire others to take on their own projects.
