Polar lights 1/350 enterprise NEW build up

Hey - I have been looking at other (also incredible) builds here for a while as a lurker.

I found this one today, and I registered just to say that this is well beyond insane. It's so well done that even my wife (who has not touched hand to brush ever) was absolutely shocked.

Fantastic work. :eek

Absolutely beautiful. I've almost reached the point on mine where I getting ready to prime. What paint did you use for the priming and light masking? I see you use a black paint to cover light leaks...I'd like to get the priming right.

Thanks!

Tamiya fine primer, I opted against car paints due to the tamiya giving a fine dusting spray to keep things smooth, for the flood light mask I did this:

1. Mask off the areas you want to floodlight on he outside
2. Hit the model with primer
3. Remove the light masks
4. Little bit of 1500 wet and dry to feather away the raised edge from the masks
5. Hit the areas that were covered by the masks that you just feathered and hit with a coat of primer again
6. Any remaining light leaks then airbrush matt black and re prime

The primer from tamiya being white allows the floodlight effect to shine through as well as allowing you to add other colours. When adding colours and changing masks there's no paint lift as the primers on first and is transparent enough to give that yellow light flood

Just use the fine white surface primer, they do a grey and dark grey, but I used white as this was the basis of the first coat

Thanks! I'll get that primer, and the terrific suggestions. I'm not really that good at painting, so this will help a great deal!

Simply incredible. I can't give any more praise that what has already been given.

You are one of only 2-3 people at the most that I've seen who understand the subtlety and minute difference in the shades when doing the 'aztek' paint job. Well done, we are humbled.

Also, what paints did you use for the blue, pearl, and copper aztec passes? Not sure if you mentioned it or not. I got that you used Tamiya White and Tamiya White Primer.

By the way this thread should be archived.

How did you mask all the windows?

humbrol liquid mask, and some vinyl cut circles i did at work - other option is a centre punch into masking tape then apply to the windows

Also, what paints did you use for the blue, pearl, and copper aztec passes? Not sure if you mentioned it or not. I got that you used Tamiya White and Tamiya White Primer.

1st: tamiya primer
2nd: pencil line on all the grooves (by the time you hit the white pearl the lines are toned down alot)
3rd : aztech 1 - revell white gloss
4rd: aztech 2 - tamiya blue spray (ts58) thinned with celly thinners and airbrushed
5th: aztech 3 - tamiya copper acrylic thinned with tamiya thinner and airbrushed
6th: aztech 4 - tamiya white pearl spray (ts45) (not THE pearl clear)

ps - if at any point the blue and copper look too much knock it back with a bit of the 3m stuff that car bodyshops use, it looks like those washing up foam things that have the scouring side - 3m stuff is similar looking to the scouring bit - it hardly takes anything off and is used before the paint coat - but its just enough to knock back the paint if its too blue or copper

I'm not much for "pat on the back" posts, but dear lord is this beautiful! Truly a case of "Zen and the Art of Starship Building" - Your meticulous, meditation-like focus has really showcased your dedication and skill. I hope you enter it into competition... I know if I were up against it, I'd have to fight off serious feelings of inadequacy! :lol

Question: For the shuttle bay, I am concerned about gluing the walls and the ceiling and floor together. When I dry fit them, I notice allot of gaps. I am lighting the model and do not want any light penetration.

Question: I noticed that there are round circles on the walls of the shuttle bay in between the ridges in the walls. This appears to a product of the plastic molds. I have noticed that most people do not sand these down. I have tried to sand them, but have had little success.

Thank you

oh wow, take me over in a shuttle scotty! (cause the transporters on the 1701 A worked about as well as the holodecks on the 1701 D hehe)

that shuttlebay, arboretum, lounge, lights, paintjob, just wow. this build is absolutely georgeous, thanks for sharing it with us op!
