It may be a good time to get back into trek props if you are going to :lol . It looks like the follow up jlong communicator kit is going to be cast directly from the shells of one of the well known surviving original communicators. How many times can you get a kit that is stated as "cast from a screen used piece" an have both photo proof of the casting process and great providence of the pieces history. You just can not ask for any better than that.
