Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review KINDA SPOILER FREE

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

Capn Jack Sparrow - Again some recycled lines from other movies but the banter between Jack and Barbossa are hilarious. Again as Rushe stated, "Jack and Hector are like a divorced couple fighting over their child The Black Pearl!"

Capn Hector Barbossa - Rushe got to play the flip side of a pirate throughout the movie which was hilarious. Especially when he is in a wig!

Capn Blackbeard - The ultimate villain. Watching it the second time I realized how good Ian McShane was as Blackbeard with exception that he was a wee bit short to play 6 foot 6 inch Edward Teach! But he still lead the way in his villainous ways!!!

Angelica Teach - Other than Penelope Cruz's heavy accent she played the roll well. As a "student" of Captain Jack she had some great bantering with the Captain in many scenes.

Scrum - Comic relief and well played!! I hope his character returns as a full blown member of the crew!

Phillip and Syrena - The love interest but not overplayed like Lizzie and the Whelp. Love story from start to finish ends in this movie...nuff said and not a spoiler alert!

Zombie crew - Great make up. Well played by the actors.

Mermaids - Again! Very eerie music to go with this sequence. I didn't mind the CGI but the entire boat scene with Gemma Ward was well done.

Joshamee Gibbs - He is the right hand man to Captain Jack Sparrow! Great ending with the two of them at the end of the movie.

Again a stinger so stick around for after the credits. Nuff said!

So, aside from the long running time, would you say that it was a kid appropriate movie, for a 9 & 6 year old to be precise? Anything that could be considered overly dark or scary for a young kid, or lots of swearing, or other inappropriate scenes?

Damnit! I TOLD my brother we shoulda stayed till after the credits! Now I guess I have to see it again?

I guess this is true of all you Jack costumers... but does anyone else find themselves starting to gesture with their hands and swagger more after seeing these films?

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

Loved the first movie, disliked the second one so much I didn't even bother watching the third one in cinema and when I did see it on DVD I just hated it.

That being said, I really enjoyed "On Stranger Tides" and will definitely see it again. Sure, it wasn't perfect but this imperfection didn't bother me too much. While some were already moaning about the budget cuts compared to the last two sequels, it didn't hurt the movie to have a saner production budget.

Personally I would have preferred less supernatural elements. Aside from the aztec gold, the first movie was pretty much set in the real world. On Stranger Tides has a cursed ship, zombified pirates, Mermaids, Vodoo ... and aside a few other things the fountain of youth, which alone would have been enough for me. But like I said, I still greatly enjoyed the movie.

It was nice to see another movie that was actually shot in 3D and not just converted. Occasionally there is a sword pointing at the camera, but I didn't have the feeling that they overdid those gimmick shots. I saw the movie at the EMPIRE in London which has Dolby 3D and I must say that, unlike with the other techniques, those glasses didn't seem to make the picture any darker.

For those looking at the movie poster and awaiting a naval battle: There is non. Where were the burning ships?

The most creepy and at the same time somehow funny scene (without spoiling it): Barbossa only hears seagulls :eek

By the way: How about a new thread WITH spoilers discussing the movie? I don't want to start it but I would join in :lol

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

AICN just posted 2 more bad reviews. I hope it's as good as you guys say it is. I plan on seeing it tonight. I don't want to be let down! I love all 3 pirates movies so far.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

I saw it yesterday, It is a great movie a lot of fun, action and beauty, i was very happy because the last part was filmed in Puerto Rico.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

I just read a review that said you should wear two eye patches when watching it. :lol

Sadly this is true.

I had high hopes for this film after reading this thread, but it really did suck. Depp has unfortunately turned his portrayal of Sparrow into a parody. Although it looks like there will be another, my hopes are, (just like after I saw the last two) rising again. After seeing those, I thought they could not possibly make another film that is this bad. Amazinly, they managed to deliver just that :rolleyes Awful, dreadful badness!!

It's like a bad song with great lyrics ...
makes it hard for me to talk about.
I think the story is great, but I think Marshall fumbled and didn't present it effectively. Pace was ... off.
Hopefully next time they give someone else a chance.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

As Marshall said it was a Three Acts in the Play.

Act 1 - Action sequences. Back story set up and introduction of characters.

Act 2 - Down time. Very little action sequences. Introduction of the antagonist to the story.

Act 3 - Action sequences culminating in final battle scene. Wrap up of character story lines that will not continue to movie 5 (which is now scheduled fro 2013 in honor of the 10th anniversary of Captain Jack Sparrow).

Roll credits!

Stinger!

I just miss the atypical Captain Jack Sparrow movie entrance ala Curse of the Black Pearl.

You're talking about structure, capt'n, which I have no problem with. (Even if I did have a problem with it, I'm not sure any obvious recap would sway me.) As I said, the story works for me.

The pace is another thing entirely. The internal movement of scenes, the transition of one to the next, and the directorial priority felt off to me. Character beats I felt should be important were glazed over while certain action sequences surrounding it lingered obtrusively.

I think all the raw story elements were present, just not in the most effective presentation.

QED, I would've preferred a different director.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

I liked the film, it reminded me of the first movie for some reason... I guess because it's Jack without the Pearl.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

Both my wife and I enjoyed this one. Not as good as the first one, but in my opinion, more fun and enjoyable than the others:thumbsup

Did anyone else see the Hugh Jackman movie preview before the movie? When I saw it, I just kept thinking Rockem, Sockem, Robots:lol

Exactly, that's what I kept thinking.:lol

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

Just got back from watching it, I enjoyed the heck out of it. I hope we can see more with the mermaid and the Missionary next movie. I kinda liked them.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

I have to be honest...this was my least favorite of the POTC series. I LOVED every single other film and while I had heard positive reviews on this one, I went in with no expectations, hoping to just have fun.

It was a fun movie, don't get me wrong. I laughed a lot and enjoyed it but I just didn't feel it had the epic feel that the others did. The storyline was enjoyable but I tend to agree with what nickytea is saying.

The concept of their characters really is great, isn't it?
Beyond anything else I've said, I find the greatest shame to be theat their scenes weren't presented in the most effective light.

I love the glass coffin sequence where he sees she can't breath, and shoves his bible in the gap to jab the hatch open. Brilliantly concieved character moment. Says immediately, with no dialogue, the point at which the character is at in his trajectory.

Just wish we could have savored it a bit more.

And the way they ended their scenes left me wanting to know more. I wonder if they will save that for the next one or if that was it?

When I read the screenplay ... that was it. They fade shimmering into the distance. Like the end of the original Little Mermaid story, in a way. The way Marshall played it, it happened so fast, you can't help but wonder what happens next.
We will see. Summer 2013.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

^Thanks for the background info Nick:) I would have liked to have seen more of a resolution and tying up of loose ends with those characters as well.
