So here is my review SPOILER FREE!

We saw a sneak preview at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood last night. It was shown to a VIP / media group and we were filler. Almost did not get in because the wifey showed up late but thank you to the security guy at the front of the line that bent over backwards to accommodate us. Good man! Good pirate......security......dude.......person!!

Pros:
- Great storyline. Just enough comedy and action.
- Good to see old characters.
- New characters were also good. Nice to see a new batch of individuals getting the stardom power now from this movie.
- Score was excellent especially the entire mermaid sequence.
- Ian McShane as Edward "Blackbeard" Teach aka Mr. Beard was a perfect match. Except he is a little short to be playing Blackbeard.
- Props, costumes, Queen Anne's Revenge WOW! NICE!
- London shots were funny and action packed.
- SOOOOOOOOOOOO many props to be made!!! I'm already starting on the 3D silver skull movie display in about a 20% smaller scale than a human sized skull! It is going well!!!
- Being a costumer I was paying close attention to some of the unanswered questions about Jack's costume as well as Angelica's costume!
- Sound editing was nicely done!

Cons:
- I could have done without the 3D but that was just the environment we were in. When we saw the 8 minute Sneak Peek at Disneyland in 3D the ambient light from the outdoors made it a perfect environment to view the Real 3D view. In the El Capitan theater it was very dark so that made the movie very dark. Even scenes that were filmed in the bright sun of Hawaii were darkened in post processing.
- Some recycled comedy lines.
- If you watched any or all the trailers / featurettes that have been hitting the web not all things made the final cut of the film. Albeit what we saw may not be the final cut.
- 2 hour 20 minute run time was a bit long so kids may start getting fidgety.
- Back story conversations in the present time. Interviews I see with actors from TV and film always say they hate when their scripts call for that sort of dialogue. But in some cases it is necessary.
- DO NOT SIT IN THE FIRST 5 ROWS IN WHATEVER THEATER YOU ATTEND IN 3D. You will get a "creek" in your neck that will last a day or so plus the Real 3D is always best middle center of any theater!

Over all I would give the movie a 4 1/2 out of 5 Stars but mainly because of the 3D and the environment in which we saw the movie. Definitely will be seeing it again! As a matter of fact we are seeing it in full costume on May 14th Pirate Fan Event and the midnight showing on May 20th!!

There you go Spoiler Free!!!!!

Oh good, glad to know this one will be great, just like the last three. Thanks for the review. :)

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

If YOU gave it a 4-1/2 out of 5...

It must be absolute crap! :lol

I think I will like this one a bit more than the others. There were too many heros! Like frakking SW PT or something. I like Pirates. I like Depp. I am just not the biggest POTC fan. I will check this one out in the theaters more than likely though.

Thanks for the spoiler free review! :thumbsup

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

Thanks for the review:thumbsup Just curious, what was your opinion of the last two films?

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

I rank them in this order:

Curse Of The Black Pearl
On Stranger Tides
Dead Man's Chest
At World's End

I enjoyed DMC even though it was hyped up because of the long awaited return of Jack but I loved loved loved the Davy Jones character and Bill Nighy was perfect in that role as is Ian McShane as Blackbeard.

I mean the movie won a SPFX Oscar for Davy Jones! That is great accolades to a great character!!!!!

AWE reminds me alot of Revenge Of The Sith! We have to wrap all the story lines up type of script. But I still liked AWE too!!!

I'm just happy you saw an advance, Cap'n Jack. All is right in the world.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

Aye! And again next Saturday followed by the midnight showing on May 20th and if the all in the world is good and the planets align and things go well....May 16th with the cast members..........:love

I rank them in this order:

Curse Of The Black Pearl
On Stranger Tides
Dead Man's Chest
At World's End

Honestly, if that's the ranking order, I'll be fine with the film. I loved the original, but found each subsequent film to be considerably worse than the one before. So if OST is better than 2 and 3, I'll be quite happy.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

As I posted to the millions of questions I got PMed on Facebook. Walk into the movie with no expectations or comparisons to the last three movies and you will be happy.

There are no tie ins to the old movies except by characters being recycled. All I can say is treat it as a brand new movie and you will enjoy it!

Just my humble opinion!

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

As someone who actually adores the sequels (got married to the wedding scene music from P3), I can't wait to unleash my humble opinion. :lol Of course, I haven't seen it yet.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

Sounds good. See it my bday weekend

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

Awwww crap!!! I didn't know it was going to be in 3D... :cry

Please, PLEASE say it's going to be shown in non-3D...

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

I seriously hope for a theater showing the movie without the 3D...

Thanks for the review Capn_!!

100% agree! Def. looking forward to seeing this:thumbsup

- Ian McShane as Edward "Blackbeard" Teach aka Mr. Beard was a perfect match. Except he is a little short to be playing Blackbeard.
Not to mention being roughly twice as old as the real Blackbeard was when he was killed. ;) Regardless, I can't think of any other actor I'd rather see as Blackbeard, so all is good.

So, based on your review, is it safe to assume this is in fact a sequel and not a prequel as early rumors stated?

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

I kind of wonder how that rumor got started?

End of Pirates 3 was "We're going to look for the Fountain of Youth."

Plot of Pirates 4 is "We are looking for the Fountain of Youth + some really good extras"

Don't see how that could be construed as anything but a sequel. But I tell you I am excited to see this come out.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides review SPOILER FREE

I love the original. The sequels were a bit overblown for my tastes, and seemed to be trying too hard to visually top the previous ones at the cost of the pacing and story. The second one was decent, the third one was....disjointed. I've always enjoyed Cap'n Jack, but it struck me that the subsequent films were just a bit less focused than the first.

If you're ranking them as you've done, I think I'll likely enjoy this one. Not sure if I'll see it in the theaters, though, since I don't really care about the 3D.

Those were my thoughts as well, but when On Stranger Tides was first announced the prevalent rumor was that it was a prequel. *shrug*

I'm almost certain they'll release it in 2D as well. There are a lot of us movie buffs that don't like 3D, don't care about 3D, can't watch 3D, and/or consider 3D nothing more than a flawed gimmick, and I'd guess Disney doesn't want to lose out on an opportunity to get our box office dollars.
