Phantom Menace Review...Everything you were thinking and more!

"What good is a protocol droid around the house, he can't even bend his arms, it's not like he can wash dishes or something"

The thing is... there is so much emphasis on Anakin being oh so dangerous and oh so evil that it is completely watered down when he actually commits pretty heinous crimes that the Jedi don't even punish or expel him for. We all knew he was gonna turn into Vader... but don't rub it in our faces every few minutes... completely ignoring all the aspects that actually made him great. It was like... ooh... aah... look at him, ain't he evil...

Where's the hero, where's the great warrior and pilot... where's Obi-Wan's friend. If the fight in ep3 hadn't lasted for half the movie (exaggerated) it would actually have been a more powerful moment when Obi-Wan calls him his brother and the let-down he was feeling... but then he just walked away from a friend who was burning, leaving him to die and I was just like... WTF. Obi-Wan tried to save him and bring him back from the darkness... Vader told that to Luke... no way Obi-Wan would just have walked away from a suffering friend like that. Or... are we meant to perceive Obi-Wan as a drunken hypocrite who speaks highly about honor and the light side, but is flawed and human and filled with as much darkness as the rest of us... or... am I overthinking it?

I wish I could see part 7!
Someone mentioned trying loading it with the HD mode in the URL... that seemed to work for some...

More than the issue of Anakin building a protocol droid for his mother in the middle of a barren desert planet, is the issue of how his design apparently is in use throughout the galaxy.

Also, did Anakin program Threepio with his 6 million forms of communication?

If so, that boy was indeed the chosen one.

Maybe he came as a "do it yourself protocol droid!" kit. Anakin had to save up all his Captain Galactic points that he got from selling the other kids useless crap, then send away for the kit so he could build MORE useless crap. So you see, he was evil from the start. ;)

Yeah, I took it as he didn't build Threepio from *scratch*, but rather pilfered parts for one from Watto over time, until he had something that worked. I would think most of him was standard factory parts. We don't know when he was programmed for 6 million forms of communication...it could've been part of the chipset (or whatever) Anakin cannibalized, or it could've been added after he was spiffed up for service to Padme.

(not to suggest TPM doesn't suck)

Didn't it state in the novel (yes I know...) that whatever he built he built from Watto parts... so basically... Watto owned 3PO and everything Anakin built from his spare parts.

Another thing I found pretty wild... the Anakin's are living pretty luxury in that hut. Lots of space... Watto was a generous slaver, then.

The slavery element is only one if the aspects that isn't really fleshed out -- merely stated and the audience is expected to go with it. He might as well be less a slave and more a serf.

LOL - I have tears streaming down my face I'm laughing so hard at Shinzon on Riza - Remans in the pool - "Spring break!"

Don't you know droids are built from kits?

He just went to "Droids-R-Us on-line" and ordered up a DIY gay droid kit.

I'm sure he makes some valid points, but I can't stand his voice. I got through about a minute of it and had to shut it off.

The first little while is definitely Andy Kaufman territory. He's daring you to take him at face value. :eek

Once you "get" what he's doing, humor becomes fun. :lol

Think of it like this: he's created a character that, once you get into it, compels you to follow his every word. It's almost hypnotic! :lol

Contrast that to a simple, dry "reading" of his salient points, with no humor or diversion. Bo... ring.

Granted the extreme implied violence is a little... disturbing. :rolleyes

Stick with him though and you'll find it time well spent.

His an important element that I agree with.

"And don't any of you fu****ts tell me that it was explained more in the novelization or some star wars book. What matters is the movie. I ain't never read one of them Star Wars books, or any books in general for that matter and I ain't about to start."

I'd like to emphasize that point because as Lucas changed the focus of the story from Luke to Anakin, all we get is Anakin crap. It's like he wasn't entirely satisfied with how lackluster his character of Anakin was and after making the new trilogy he decided to make a second Clone Wars series to flesh out the character more.

I think the Lucas media empire just wants to keep the gravy train rolling and they know telling stories about Luke, Han, Leia and Chewie won't matter to their target demographic: 5-11 year olds.
