Suggestion Petition: Let's have a vehicle replica sub-forum

Mods, I wasn't sure where to post this at, so feel free to move it, if needed.

For a while, I had the idea to suggest a forum only for 1/1 fully working and steady vehicle prop replicas, but wasn't sure how to introduce it. I see people building Tumblers, Ecto 1s, knight riders, land Speeder, General Lees, Deloreans, and talking about Akira bikes and, even, the Airwolf helicopter, so i figure the time is now, while the greatest vehicle replicas are being built now and getting so much media attention.

So, instead of having these milestone prop replica achievements scattered all over the prop and the off-topic forums, why not give them a 1 place were all sort of auto custom fabrication and the mechanics can be discussed at? i think we have, here, more than enough people with 1/1 car/vehicle replica to get us started, so I doubt the forum will lack traffic. It would be like Monster Garage, but on-line.

Movie cars, in general, can be discussed, too, such as the James Bond BMW, Transformer's Chevrolet Camaro Bumble bee, etc.

Why not? 1/1 Space ships, too, such as the Blade Runner Spinner, ST Galileo, etc. Either fan-made of screen-used, just as long as is it considered a vehicle and 1/1.

So, who else thinks this is a good idea?

Are there really enough of these ?

At first I thought it was a great idea, but now I'm thinking it would be a section with maybe ten threads in it.

Would that really be worth the mod's time ?

If we did get a section like this, I'd expect all the talented people here to step it up and make it worth it.

But the more I think about it a 1:1 prop is a 1:1 prop. Whether you carry it or wear it or get inside it and drive it around, it's still a 1:1 prop. I also think many of us that would love to jump into a project of this scale are just to broke right now.

So I have to vote "no"

Technically wouldn't this go in the studio scale section :ninja

I wouldn't think there would be enough builders for this section to thrive. And all of this coming from a guy that was building an Eleanor from the 2000 Gone in 60 seconds.

I think this is a great idea. it is unique in that these are mostly working vehicles. I have enough stuff on my tumbler I could fill a huge amount of space. And yes some of us are getting media attention. I was in the sept. issue of popular mechanics, and in boulevard magazine, did 20 radio interviews, and am being courted by TLC.
It would be of major interest to a lot of folks. You would have everything from the star wars landspeeder, to the knightrider, to the 89 batmobile, the 92' batmobile, the 95' batmobile, the 66 batmobile the tumbler, the general lee, etc.. etc.. it would start to draw in car guys in general, because these cars are not anything standard, but parts of them are. I'm sure people would be interested to know how I set up my drive train, and managed to keep more passenger space than a 4x4 truck. how did knightrider build the dash? ect. etc.. and people would not have to sift though tons and tons of unrelated props to find a replica vehicle.

Id be up for it.
Ive built a VR6 MkII VW Golf for a client as a custom. I have lots of build photos relevant to whacky fibreglassing and welding techniques, for instance.
Why not??

Explaining my proposal more in depth:

I did mentioned the discussion of already built 1/1 vehicle replicas, which can be limited, but I also suggested the endless discussion of all cars used in films and TV shows. Help with Identifying a car, who has owned a car based on its participation in a film, what is available now, what conversions/customizations were made to such and such vehicle, what are those things inside the Delorean time machine, what motorcycle was used for this show, the making of the Ghost Rider chopper, Fast and the furious cars, etc, etc.

Then, there is the discussion of full body fiber-glassing, interiors, wiring, painting and glossing, even oil-chance. We have got plenty of members with experience in body work, and car care, to share the knowledge with everyone.

Unlike most hand-held props, which do nothing, working vehicles have got a unlimited number of subjects to discuss.

After seeing these posts I have to change my vote to a "yeah"

If there was a place were I could pick up welding techniques and pointers on structural supports and one off fiberglass work , I think that would be awesome.

I was not sure at first but now I love the idea (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Hey guys. Thanks for the suggestions. We are workinng on a number of other initiatives right now, but love the idea! Let us look into it a bit. Our initial thoughts lie along the same lines as 00MrNotWrong00's first post, but we would be glad to be wrong and would welcome another segment of the prop community! Will get back to you on this one, but it might be just a bit.

I am sure a section liike this would take right off. You would be surprised.

You could always make this a section, not only about replica cars, but memebers rides in general. Collectors and classics and the like.

I am sure this section would expend peoples knowledge of doing fiberglass work, electronics, materials for interiors and so on. These tips would also work in creating props, and electronics as well as in the costuming area.

We have had various car related threads in the past and I am sure one section with everything together would be awesome.

I might be one of those RPFers who might spend more time in this kind of forum than the regular prop forum, since most of the attention always go to the same SW stuff, there.

Aside from props and costuming, what 99% of us have in common is that we drive and operate vehicles in a daily basis. Imagine all that we can learn regarding this daily shore.

Cars and vehicle customizing has really taken off in this decade. What used to be done in special shops has become more of a home-grown hobby, and visa-versa. Unlike props, this industry is organized and heard of world-wide.

Given the view counts, I'm under the impression this forum doesn't get a lot of attention, and this petition is going unnoticed. Perhaps, we should have banners linking people to this thread.

I would love to see this. My first "Prop" and first love, has been "The General Lee" from the Dukes Of Hazzard. I have a replica General and would love to work towards other replica cars. A sub-forum for that would be great!

I'm totally for the creation of a Vehicle sub-forum - of course, I'm biased :)

Heck, even paper-props got theirs :)

Still looking into this. There certainly does seem to be interest which is AWESOME! Just to be clear, the paper-props got a forum of their own in order to protect those assets which were being ripped off from this site on a regular basis and sold on eBay. While the same is possible for any item here on the RPF, paper props were particularly vulnnerable to being missued by non-board members.

I swear, if I didn't know any better, I would begin to question whether or not you liked the OT... Sometimes I almost get this feeling that you might NOT be totally in love with it... :lol

Seriously, we are actually looking at a bit of restructure and reorganization, and while there might be some merges... the chances of us closing down the OT are... well.. it just isn't going to happen. :(

I approve of this new sub-forum idea. It would take almost 5 minutes for an admin to create it. Seems to be plenty of material to cover in it, would add to the distinctiveness of the RPF collective.
