Re: Pep to Molded Plastics War Machine,Gatling Gun,Stronger Mount and Other WM Weapon
So I promised a tutorial on the lamination process I use to obtain my smooth panels.
After finishing the pepakura into fiberglass and covering with bondo I work to get it as smooth as possible
I take tracing paper and trace around the edges to make a paper template
The paper template is traced onto the ultra thin and hard phenolic plastic sheet. This stuff is very thin hard and strong on compression, but it will snap if folded, but it cuts well with a set of very sharp scissors!!
You end up with a template to laminate on to the armor
The plastic is sort of stiff to bend onto complicated curves so..
I take my heat gun and on high with gloves I warm it up pretty good and press it into shape as it cools. This will make gluing only slightly easier lol.
I sand and scuff the plastic as it is super slippery and I think it will not adhere well unless there is a better surface to grab the glue. I then wipe it down with denatured alcohol to make sure no production lubricants are on the plastic.
I then grab 5 minute epoxy and another set of hands to glue it all together.
a little sanding and a little bondo on the edges between the laminated sheets to make the edges pretty
A little primer and you have a section done ... for now lol...:devil
You still have to do the whole suit, then clean up and finish sand, re-prime, sand more....:facepalm
I hope this helps! I dont think I will be using too much of this on the MK3 as there are a lot more curves and less flat panels, though there are some....
