Part Time Props: Variable Threat Response Battle Suit

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

Feel free to go on my thread also for some help..i have and working on the pods myself..i also have a mounting way to put mini gun..

I saw that, it is very impressive. I will be referencing that for sure when it comes time to put the mini gun on my Warmachine build. I finally have some time to start on this build. I have been doing research for almost a year on this. I have started and not finished a lot of other builds. This was the first one that i wanted to do but was very inexperienced. Now that i have dappled in building two versions of the Iron Patriot, i feel i know enough to try a paper build. I started a second school and now i work 6 days a week for at least 12 hours a day, so i only really have Sunday's to work on the suit. I just printed off the helmet today, hopefully i will have some time tomorrow to start to cut out the pep files. Looks like i need to invest in a Silhouette Cameo!

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

I have been working on a under suit idea for the armor as well. I have been referencing arm and leg braces. i think i have come up with a cool idea for attaching and wearing the suit and having full range of motion. Ill post my design when it is all finished.

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

Range of motion? Sounds like a dream come true and look forward to it! I'm gearing up for a War Machine 2.0 build and looking to improve my shortcomings with my first suit including ab and cod issues as well as some hand and chest flaws. If I figure out any good designs to help I'll post here. Goals include flexible ab design to allow bending over more and the ability to sit

Nice! i was very disappointed with the lack of show casing of Iron Patriot aka "Warmachine MKII" in Iron Man III. Because of this, i lost interest in that build i had. There are still a lot of things i would like to do to my IP, but that will be for another time.

My range of motion ideas are:

For the arms and legs, using an existing design utilized in arm and leg braces. For the shoulders, i have been working on a hand made piston, that i can attach to the shoulder, biceps, and chest just like Stark has on his suit in the movie. you can see this really good in the first IM movie when he shoots the forearm rocket at the tank and walks away. The brackets im making for the legs will extend to the hip pods and move with them when walking, and have a pivot for the ankle, this will give great articulation to the foot as well. I have learned a few tricks for prototyping some of my ideas from TheRealStark, they work fantastic.

As for your idea on how to make the abs more flexible, i have seen many builders make each ab independent so that they can move and bend. Attaching them to the sides of the lower torso and leaving them to freely move in the center section. There is a video clip of this floating around Jackie's Iron Patriot thread.

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

interesting. I'll definitely have to look into that. I was looking into a type of scissor brace system where I have a few attachment points for each ab level, the end goal would to be have a result something like this Master Le Cosplays: Iron Patriot Plated flexible abdominal's - YouTube

I do need to look into ab construction in general since my issue last time was the attachment of the abs with the spine, cod, and chest. I'll be sure to post any potentially good ideas here and my trial and error maybe we can all figure out a good easy system

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

Found this stuff called worbla. It is a flexable material that when heated, it can be molded over anything and retain the shape. I have seen people use this over craft foam. Im going to order some and put it over my Warmachine helmet. I will post pictures of the progress. I chose to go this route, because i dont have the time i thought i did to do a complete paper build. I am going to use the HD files i have to make foam conversion templates, and then use the worbla over it. This way i have the foam on the inside and the hard surface on the outside.

Here is a link to the site: Where to buy | Worbla's Finest Art

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

I heard of something similar..that i was going to use for armor parts..the bad thing about it is that if you heat it over some stuff it won't show the details as much and if has to get heated so much to flex could damage foam or glue can become Soft and loss its shape..just a thought..

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

Little update on my progress:

I made the helmet out of foam. The scale was a bit off. So back to the drawing board. I also was using 1/4 inch foam. So now im going to use the same scale but use 1/8 foam.

I had an idea which might end up being cheaper then buying the worbla and putting that all over the suit parts. I found some cardboard that is very thin, it looks to me barley 1mm. It is used for the backing of photos and to put into envelopes to keep them from bending. I found a lot of 200 pcs of 8x11 on ebay for like $15.00. I am going to cover the foam with the cardboard and use Epoxy Resin and bondo over it. Ill do a few test pieces and post my results.

He is what the helmet was looking like. I also stumbled upon a sweet find to make the eyes with. The best part is i can see through them with out having to look through a little slit under the eyes. I cant give away the secret yet, not until i modify them. Here are some test pictures.

20131115_213038[1].jpg20131115_213238[1].jpg20131115_213315[1].jpg20131115_213324[1].jpg20131115_213456[1].jpg20131119_182838[1].jpg20131119_182846[1].jpg20131119_182907[1].jpg

I think that i might 3d print the mohawk, ears, and eye insert if i can't make them come out good. The picture with the detail piece in the chin i made removable. This particular helmet was not going to open and close, so i made it removable so i could take a drink every now and again when walking round.

I wasn't too concerned about gaps in the construction of this helmet because i was going to coat it in Worbla. Once i get the cardboad in i ordered i will be making a helmet out of the 1/8 inch foam and then using the same helmet but in pepakura mode to make the cardboard pieces to put over the foam.

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

Two quick questions from someone who is going to be attempting this for the first time:

1. How do you scale the pattern for your own body size? I'm a bigger guy and wondering how to adjust the sizes.
2. What do you print the patterns out on? Like a paper plotter for CAD drawings?

Thanks a ton!

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

To answer your questions:

1: as far a scaling goes, what i did was to scale each body part individually. There is a good tutorial on how to do this on YouTube. Just search for Pepakura scaling. Just make sure that when you do scale, scale specific areas with the same scale to make them proportionate. For example, when doing the legs, scale the thigh and shin with the same scale, for the arms, scale the shoulder, biceps, and forearms with the same scale. The chest and torso with the same scale. As for everything else, you can scale the helmet with what ever fits your head. same goes for gloves, fingers, and boots.

2: I used to use 176 gram card stock in my printer. that was what i used when dong foam templates. Now that im going some parts in Pepakura paper templates, i have tried something new. I am using cardboard that is used for the backing in picture frames and envelopes to keep letters from bending when mailed, and gluing the templates i print out on regular paper to the cardboard. At first i used cardstock onto the cardboard, but it was too think to use. So far it is working out great. Here are a few pictures of what i have so far.

20131126_110103.jpg20131126_110113.jpg20131126_110123.jpg20131126_110158.jpg20131126_110226.jpg20131126_110231.jpg

As you can see from the picture where i am comparing the face plate i made with cardstock to the one i started with the cardboard and paper hybrid, the cardboard is a lot more sturdy and durable. There is no wrinkling or bending in it like the cardstock one.

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

176grm cardstock, what is that in lbs? The face plate is looking awesome, nice and crisp look to it. You mentioned scaling, after 4 helms i opted with using a michrometre on my head lol and with some help from Ghost Minion, my current helm fits like a glove. Can't wait to see more...GM

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

Opps, ment grams. lol

i would like my helmet to fit like a glove, however, i want to leave some room for electronics, especially the face plate servo.

I finished the face plate with the cardboard and cardstock that i am using. Here is a video of a durability test with the finished Hybrid version and the standard 176 gram cardstock one.

I should be starting the jaw piece tonight. I am going to build the helmet in pieces that are listed in the pep file i have a separate objects.

Lol well thats what i meant. with the electronics i should fit like a glove...GM

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

I'm new here. Can someone here tell me how to assemble all these parts together? I will really appreciate that :)

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

I have been trying very hard to find a place to download warmachine files. 4 shared will not work no matter how I try it. im 6 foot tall and would liek some scaled files in a way i can actuly down load and print to start construction, is anyone able to help me?

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

I have been away for some time. School and work has kept me really busy. I have been playing a lot of Gears 3 and have decided to make the Lancer assault rifle. I happened to find a nice HD model for the lancer and have started to unfold it. It was not coming out the way that i hoped. So i was looking on the internet for a good tutorial on how to unfold a model. After looking around i found a great one on 405th. Here is a link to it.

Spent Sunday working on this. Not a fan of how the Mohawk came out. Ill have to fix that. Look much better then the last one i made.

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

Made a lot of progress last night on the chest piece. Found a new source for adhesive instead of using hot glue. Contact Cement, who knew..... Works way better then hot glue and is just as fast. Just apply a bit with a brush to both sides of what you are putting together, wait a few minutes, ( i hit it with a heat gun real quick to help the process along ) then just put the pieces together slowly. I say slowly because once you start putting the edges together, it had to pull apart with out leaving pieces of the opposing edge. No hot surface to mess with and no glue seeping out of the edges and no clean up from over gluing. Makes really nice crisp edges and seems.

Re: War Machine Pepakura Files

Yep. Contact cement is the way to go for gluing foam. I use Weldwood by DAP. Check out my thread to see the results. Have built 7 suits over the past couple of years and it rocks. Also, putting together a War Machine as well. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread as you go along. Good luck!
