Painting resin question

I am not sure if this is the place but I have a question about painting resin.
Often when I paint a resin piece, the paint will stay tacky to the touch, what causes this? I use a sandable primer first, and it let it dry, but about 25% of the time when I use my color paint on it it will stay tacky even after 12 hours. Now keep in mine I and using the same paint and resin on several pieces and just a 2 or 3 out of 10 will stay tacky. Any help would be apreciated.

It is probably the Paint, if you are using Plasticote paint, for example, I have never known this type of paint to dry properly (esp if sprayed thickly).
Also mixes of resin may differ, which may do something odd to the paint......

But my money would go on paint thickness!!!

I never had a problem with that. I use Krylon Gray Primer, then use Floquil or something similar. It usually dries in about 15 minutes.

What paint are you using?

Generally when I've seen this sort of behavior it implies that there is actually an issue with the cure of the resin on the affected pieces.

It sounds as though they likely haven't cured correctly/completely and start to bleed over time which can and will affect any paint/primer you put on the pieces. Especially since this is only happening on a small number of several cast pieces. There are definitely lousy paints, but in your case if it was the paint you would expect that on all pieces to some degree.

I've seen this happen on pieces a week or more after they were painted with no apparent issues. The chemicals in the improperly cured resin continue to seep out over time and affect even "cured" paint.

I think it's caused by the mold release still on the resin surface. You should prep it properly before painting. Usually, I would wash it thoroughly with warm water and soap and wetsand the part before priming.

I've had luck with hardcore sandpaper and krylon fusion but it's real hit or miss. sometimes I put on barely too much and have to start over, sometimes I get it right.
