Painting clear plastic

Hey everyone,

I need to paint a clear plastic lens so it looks like you can see through it, any ideas on what kind of paint to use or...If that does`nt pan out, what kind of black paint should I use just to darken it up?

Tamiya has acrylic colors that are transparent. I am planning on using the "smoke" tone for a canopy.
