Pacific Rim (Post-release)

I loved the movie...but while we are on the subject, instead of putting up your defenses in various cities, why not just set up shop right there at the rift and blast em right when they come out.

Oh noes....poking holes all over this one...um...um...Kaiju fighting robots is cool!

Because underwater is a hostile environment? Look what happened to the poor Ruskies when they got knocked underwater. Drowned and then blown up in their own Jaeger.

:lol that's the FIRST thing that i questioned... Have some-kind of huge wall around it with mechs on top blasting away.

"Rifts is opening" and... blast away. Done.

As for the underwater part, have mechs built for underwater combat...

It's underwater and the rift appeared at random times (and it's not exactly a precise single hole either), which is what the scientists were trying to calculate, the timing of their appearance along with Kaiju category. It wouldn't be wise to have all their Jaegers stationed with the pilots deep beneath the ocean all the time.

How about just 200 of those plasma cannons pointed right at the rift?

I hope there is a sequel. Who knows where the next rift will open. San Andreas fault? Kaiju and an 8.9 earthquake!

Also, considering how quickly the Kaiju were emerging, you'd have to halt construction and try to fight them back without damaging your hard work on the defenses. Look at how long the land-based wall was taking, and that was with a reasonable amount of time to send a Jaeger to intercept the Kaiju before they smash a year of work up, and even then, sometimes the Jaegers didn't make it in time. Trying to builda defense system right there at the rift would be a nightmare.

It also seemed that some of the mechs design was intended for underwater combat, the ability to seal off the system, in-suit oxygen and whatnot.

Eh. dunno. It's kinda like a big version of the PPG from B5. Not that great for rain, etc.

I think a plasma cannon like they had would just not work that great in water at any range other than VERY SHORT. Seems like it'd cool it down or end up burning through a ton of energy to boil/vaporize the water around it.

I'm thinking way too much about a movie that had a plasma cannon with a clip :lol

The way it works in my head, is if the Kaiju invade from water, and the plasma cannons they had didn't exactly do great IN water, it wouldn't make much sense to have em up on the wall. Might be why they seemed to just beat the crap out of the thing first, and use the cannons as a coup de grace.

Also, in regards to putting em on the rift, the rift was basically a big chunk of the pacific ocean. It's why various continents were attacked, ranging from San Diego to Alaska to Australia. It wasn't a case of "Oh, the rift is right here", and they had already mentioned trying to nuke it back when the whole thing started. It didn't work well.

I'd love some EU novels or tech specs to give a bigger background to how the Jaegers worked and how the war went. The movie stepped over a LOT of history to bring us the first big failure of the program.

Actually they knew precisely where the rift was. Yes it's large, but they knew and were even able to point point the locations when ever a Kaiju was poping up.

They could have easily contain that area MUCH more smartly.
They could have also have mobile plasma gun ships.
How about using their 1 million + helicopters for something else? Like maybe shooting missiles into the eyes of the Kaiju's and stuff...

The movie, on a 'tactical' point left me lacking a LOT.

Fun blockbuster though!!!

rule of cool, guys. rule of cool.

sure, modern weapon systems mean you can destroy your target before you even have visual contact, but this is a movie about giant mechs punching giant monsters in the face. :cool

The hubby and I saw it last night. GREAT movie! It delivered exactly what I wanted: giant monsters getting beaten up by giant robots.

Surprisingly, I'm kind of sad we didn't get to see it in 3D. The only 3D showing after I got off work at 3:30 was at almost 11pm!

Saw this movie again in full size IMAX 3D. The 3D didn't do anything for the movie IMO but the full IMAX was pure epic-ness! Nothing like giant kaiju fights on a giant screen!

Maybe a sequel is possible after all.
Pacific Rim (2013) - Box Office Mojo

Movie needs more than $400m to break even, factoring in marketing cost and theaters getting half of the box office take. Still got some ways to go, international is what needs to carry this movie for a sequel.

I choose to remain ever the optimist. $178 million worldwide without yet opening in Japan and China. I know it's a huge long shot, but why not?!
