I’m no expert. I start with some texture for the rust wash’s to cling to. Then I use Vallejo wash’s or mix my own , with cheep acrylic from the craft store. There’s no quick way , you just build up very light wash’s starting with the lighter colours working out further to the darker colours. I know what you mean. I have that thought with everything I work on. Like when I make costumes based on movie characters, I realize I'm probably the only one who will know if it's accurate. I made a Star Lord costume, going to great lengths to craft every detail on his vest, and someone just thought I was Han Solo.
