Oni / Buhal'ra (Southeast Asian / Pacific) Yautja

Oh yeah, might have missed my question earlier, but to anyone out there, how many strand of 'locks does an average Yautja have? I've done the dread holes for the left side (didn't take a pic) and it's 34 in total. If the other side comes out exactly the same, I'll be looking at about 68 strands. Is that too little a number? Cheers and thanks!

Thanks fellas! There's actually quite some space left for about 10 more..I'm going for the 'Super Predators' style of dreadlocks, as I want them to have the feel of 'real' dreadlocks, instead of tentacle-ish.. ;P

Cheers!

Happy enough to cast! (Sculpt wise) :D

Might smoothen some things out here and there, or add more 'age' lines, but so far, very content on what's done so far.. Now comes the 'hard' part...Casting..

Hard, because, in all honesty, I've only done it twice before, 16 years ago, and I was just basically assisting..I've been watching some videos, but I reckon someone with experience showing me, helping me out will be better. I'm just not confident enough.. :(

Bit of good news though..I've talked to one of my local suppliers, and they were willing to get me in touch with one or 2 of our local prop masters here, who did props/prosthetics for projects like Last Samurai, Legend of the Seeker, Spartacus, etc.. (I'm so excited like a school girl! ;P).. I hope to get in their good graces and I'll be Ecstatic to just be able to talk to them..I hope they can see me as a budding fellow talent who can have an opportunity (and not charge me an arm and and a leg for a little help)to shine if given a chance!

Getting mushy now, anyway, tips, guides, whatever advise you can throw me away will be much appreciated fellas!!! Cheers and have a happy Friday!

Hi all, just another update, or wanting some feedback..still haven't heard from the guy who I think can help me with the casting, could be the long easter weekend here, but while waiting, thought I'd start on the dreads.. found some soft packing foam(not sure what you call it) lying around, and thought they'd be a good base for the dread sculpt..I've made the first one, which is gonna be the longest/thickest/ biggest at about an inch in diameter at the roots.

The longest is 58cm (23in), wanted it to be longer, but I felt that making it longer, there would be complications when I bunch them up and tie them in a top knot. Shortest will probably be around 40cm. Was going for a uneven, asymmetrical look, to make it look more like real hair dreadlocks, rather than tentacle-y. The 2 thickest will have the 'ridges' near the roots.. What do you guys think? Doesn't it seem too thick?

Wanted to see what you all think before I make the other 3. :p Thanks all!

I'm no expert here, but I used Backer Rod for my wall mounted bio's. It comes in many sizes and can be tapered at the ends using a simple belt sander. I know the material doesn't provided the natural wiggly effect, but adding dread rings adds weight and it looks good if you coat the material with black colored Plasti Dip spray.

Hi TC, thanks for the tip, but I already plan to make the dreads out of BJB or a similar material :) Just wondering what peeps thought about the look of it :) Thanks so much though!

Ok;

I’ll provide a little feedback. :p

The face on your 1:1 is super bad ass. This is where you want people to focus their attention and marvel at your artistic skill. Adding a huge amount of dreads with a braided look might take away from the overall appearance. Please don’t take this wrong. The idea is really cool, but so much additional details might overwhelm the completed work.

If I had your skills I would stick with the common looking dread lock appearance and simply add the hairlines on each one. This will provide a very symmetrical and smooth flowing appearance from the rear and allow all those details on the face to take center stage.

Bottom-line is this…

It’s your creation. Go with what you like the most. Either way you have earned a place amongst the bad ass sculptors. (y)
