Wanted to show my "Old Ben" robes for the upcoming C IV. I still have tweaks to do on the sleeves and hood, but it's 95% complete. :) I could never have done this without the help of my buddy Hermes. He took my reference photos and created this pattern. He's a genius with this stuff!!!

Dave - those look superb!
I've got to say that is the most authentic looking Old Ben costume I've seen! Excellent work by you and Hermes.

Chris

Thanks guys. I have a few things to do to make it how I want it, but I'm extremely happy with the results so far. :)

Great robes, Dave. Spot on. Are you going to dye your hair white to complete the look? Wish I could go to C 4. Too expensive for my blood.

By far, the best Ep.IV Obi I have seen ... really really amazing work... Dave, congratulations, I know how long have you been after this costume ;)...

I agree, great piece of work there. What's the running total in materials? Great job, and thanks for posting..

Well guys, the materials are the reverse of the Yoda materials which would be screen accurate: The Robe is a very rare natural silk and the cloak is an equally hard to find wool. This wool has a very unique weave of darker and lighter wool strands which give it the screen look. Both materials are quite expensive considering you need about 7 yards of each. Seems like the silk ran close to $28 per yard and the wool was about $19 per yard.

As for patterns, I am sorry that I can't give away a solid year of research, but if you contact Hermes, he will be happy to receive your fabric (or supply something quite similar), and create the robes for you. In the states, the inner robe and cloak will cost you roughly $280 for a seamstress to take your material and sew it all together for you. Hermes can take your measurements and create the garments for you.

Once the patterns came together, we discovered that the appropriate sections did in fact, appear exact for Yoda's costume.......which led us to believe the original Yoda robe was an unfinished old ben robe without the trim etc..... Sure enough, when I set the mannequin at 26-28" this portion of the old ben robe is perfect as long as the sleeves are shortened. Hermes can also provide you a Yoda costume.

Hermes and Myself decided about 6 months ago, that we would not give out the patterns. You just have no idea how much research and development was involved in this endeavor. Hermes is a serious costume designer and part of our agreement was that he would keep the patterns for himself to sell costumes for a very reasonable amount. You won't end up spending $500 on this Yoda costume, though I would pay it in a heartbeat for the Old Ben robes. We haven't set a price for the costumes, but we are currently discussing it. He has to do a couple of these to see what kind of time and materials he has to give up for a costume like this. Plus he does need to be compensated for it as this is his only business. You should see his other works. Simply stunning. This is not a for sale thread or even an interest thread, but a showoff thread. In the event that a costume becomes for sale, you will see it offered in the junkyard. :)

I hope that answers your questions for now. Please contact me her or via PM for further questions. :)

Doesn´t it look good?:) Man, I`m so glad this one turned out this way!!!

Congratulations, Dave!! A wonderful work there!

Now I´ve got to make more of these :)

May the Force be with you!!

Hermes!

Very nice you two! I really want to go as old Ben for Halloween this year and I've been slowly collecting reference photos. I see you're way ahead of me. :) This looks like a great costume and I'll be anxiously awaiting an interest thread in the junkyard.

I think your costume looks great. I'm very partial to mine even though it isn't as screen accurate as yours.

I'd update mine but like I said, I'm partial !

If you need any tips on the hair, let me know.

Thanks JK, I'd love to hear how you make dark brown hair into gray. Is there a temporary solution??? Something that washes out????

By the way, I've made alterations, hood is now exactly how I wanted it and sleeves have been made slightly smaller. Pics coming up later!!!!!

Dave :)

Hair whitener: Back in the day when I used to do a lot of theater, I always used white liquid shoe polish, like the stuff they used to sell to renew white sneakers. Just comb it in a bit at a time until you get the amount of coverage you want. It dries a bit stiff, but a gentle combing softens things up. Washes right out, too. Might have a bit of a problem with "dandruff" on your costume, so use with care around precious fabrics. I THINK it'll wash out of fabrics too, but YMMV.

Cheers,
Doc
