Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

While folks ponder the Ash blister, here are a couple shots of the Nostromo scanned from "Special Effects: an oral history" by Pascal Pinteau. :cool

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Let's talk about Ash's blister again for a moment... Here is a screencap, hope it'll help locate its exact position on the ship underbelly...

Fred

Here's a quick sketch for development perhaps during lunch hour on my thoughts of it's location to airlock... had to figure out the angles from memory on viewing the film but I'm sure I could tighten up the design...

Space Jockey, your layout is great but I think the blister is in the wrong direction, it should be turned to the left...

Why do I say that ?

Because when the rescue team begins to fade into the distance, Ash shows he can still see them well, he even does a sign with his hands. I we assume the elevator is positioned aside one of the two rear legs, then the blister should be turned toward the front leg, the one Dallas, Kane & Lambert are passing by in the background of the scene...

What do you think ?

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

It's definitely a tricky configuration to work out; I did think about turning it the other direction but the one thing stopping me from doing that is the direction Ash is walking when the crew return from the derelict and are in the airlock... we see Ash walking from the right of the screen to the inner lock door, which gives the impression the blister is on the side of the airlock I've shown it...
but I will dig out the dvd over the weekend and refresh my memory on camera angles etc when he's sitting in his console...hopefully more people will sketch too and throw in their ideas.
Thanks Fred

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

I understand...
It's really, really difficult to clearly visualize where this thing could be located... Damn Ash, I know we have his sympathy but I would prefer a little help from him to help us on this !
:)

Thats what I am doing at this moment while waiting for parts to dry, fast forward and reverse on my DVD seeing this layout....man, that is kind of creepy that little shuffle he does in the observation blister...obviously cold down there (its on C deck) but kinda gives you a clue Ash is a little weird...

Today I finished the re-worked VTOL Thrusters as per Space-Jockeys specs, Here is a partially built small nostromo with the large nostromo and New version VTOL thrusters set on the bottom of the Nacelles.. Thanks!!!!

This little Nostromo is a cutie, BRAVO !!!

I do agree regarding Ash, you could feel something was wrong with him after seeing this...

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

I have no idea if these pics will help at all with detailing... but they are from unused effects footage, seen in the documentary "ALIEN SAGA"

Apparently four months' worth of effects work was thrown out by Ridley when he saw it.. I'm not sure what these ships are supposed to be but they look like they belong more in Space 1999 or something.

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

WOW! Incredible photos as usual!!!!

I have no Idea where that strange ship you posted here came from, but it is very much with the same detail pattern in the aft hull as the Nostromo. Maybe the missing Shuttle? Very, very nice pics here.... I dont know where you get them, I thought I had seen everything!(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

Thanks. The strange ship shown in rear and front views (the "x-wing" nose is in front) is apparently a rejected ship design for ALIEN!

Re: Update! First Nostromo parts out of the Mold!

It look a little bit like a Thunderbird... Definitely "made in the UK" concept spaceship !

I get the impression, and it's backed up by some comments from one of the producers on the Quadrilogy dvd, that the colour change on the Nostromo was Ridley's ploy to keep control of the modelwork. The colour was changed when Ridley had finished the live-action shooting and was at Bray Studios to personally oversee the modelwork, effectively taking over from Brian Johnson after BJ moved on to TESB. Everything Johnson had shot up to then on the yellow Nostromo was made redundant.

Right modelmaker, wrong series! :lol

This is a model Martin Bower made as an outside contractor for 'Dr. Who'.

It was in the 1977-78 season story 'Underworld' (not being swotty - I had to look it up!). From memory, Ian Scoones handled the miniature FX on this one. They also shot at Bray Studios (unusual for the BBC), which was particularly suited to model-work as it had a roof-mounted lighting grid. I remember the shots being a cut above the average for the time!

I have never seen most of the photos at that link! :eek

A pity, but as we know from the Blade Runner Final Cut documentary, Ridley was not shy about tearing things down and starting over, if he felt like it! :lol

It probably makes working for him a pain, but the results do end up on the screen in the final print.

Wild! So the pics I showed, are not even models done for ALIEN?

The documentary Alien Saga splices in those shots, giving you the imporession that they are work done for Alien, and part of the reason Ridley had the effects done over! :lol
