Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Still curious as to which inverter is being used though.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

I'll answer that for ya :)

He ripped the V2 circuit out and replaced with the 9v setup so his have batteries in the sole. They are a LOT better as they last over 4 hours like the RDs. The V2s (as I found out on Sat night) barely get 3hours.

3 hours only!? Omg... One thing I never checked was the LED, looks like I'm changing out the heel cup LEDs then, 3 hours is no use :(

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

I am surprised you get 3 hours out of them. The battery is only a tiny 3v CR2032 battery. This is why it can't even power an EL strip.

I actually like the idea of being able to swap out the batteries, so I can have the lights on for 10 hours if I want. Of course it would be cool to be able to recharge them as well.

Cheers for clarifying the exact battery. Reckon you could simply clamp another 2032 to it to give you longer life? Would it charge ok..? :popcorn

Nope, it is encased in plastic resin.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Cant smash it, that thing is in there!

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

So the batteries currently used in them last for how long if you dont fiddle with them??

IE straight out of the box?

The reason it wont power an EL is due to Ampage/current draw. I reckon as soon as you try it just drains the battery straight down?? Or not?

I snipped my Blue sole LEDs and tried to hook the wires up to an inverter and a small piece of EL and couldnt get it to glow even a little. Being that you are the wiring guy maybe you can tell me what that means. I tried it with a small 3v inverter and a piece of EL for the ankle strap so maybe 2"x1".

I reckon around 2.5hours. This was without an EL Nike logo, just out of the box on a full charge. As Brad found, it's only a small 3v cell battery.

I will be doing a full Nike logo strap set soon for mine. I have:

4 CR2032 batteries
2 CR2032 battery holders modified to hold two
4 2.5cm x 5cm EL panels (two spare if I cock up..)
A roll of wire tape

I am going to peel the strap in two, cut the glow in the dark Nike logo out and then widen the gap in the inside of the white buckle to seat the batteries and tiny inverter.

It works a treat and will likely last around the same time as the rest of the circuit, but you will have to manually plug the batteries in when you want them on.

I'm no electrical genius but that won't work. If the LEDs only last 2 and a bit hours it sure as hell wouldn't light EL with a 3v inverter. Even if it did, it would be weak and drain that tiny battery in less than an hour. A totally pointless exercise there I'm sorry to say buddy.

I'd go with a seperate power source for the EL, or pray that Brad begins to offer his excellent '9V' services as I agree, that is the BEST way to do it. My Markpoon conversion lasted 6hours and was still going strong on a 9volter with 3 EL sections.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

2 3.7v in parallel with a 3v inverter I think would work quite nice and last a while

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

ya i figured, but as I had the shoe apart I figured it was worth a try to see what would happen, anything to help figure this thing out

Oh yea, not saying what you did was pointless. We're all here to learn and try stuff out, it's this kind of input that helps us all discover the best way to do it :thumbsup

Currently, a 9v battery is the way to do it and have them last well but it's a pig to replace everything.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Ye Brad but can you not use a rechargeable 9v battery and hook up a dc port so they are rechargeable?

I was wondering if this is possible. How would the wiring circuit look?

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Just run a positive and negotive from the battery to a dc charger (use a 9v Zener diode along the positive) check my wiring diagram below and basically use the same setup where the battery is (ignore the rest)

Don't quote me on it but I think it should work? Don or Cloneprops would be able to clarify for sure! :D

Cloneprops if you read this can you answer me a quick question? How did you get your custom mags to run EL and LEDs off a 3v inverter hooked up to a high mAh coin cell battery?

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

I have my dc port wired to my lithium 3.7 battery, right now the battery is only used for the strap EL. I left the strap on for like 8 hours yesterday because I wanted to drain the battery, once the battery died I plugged it back in and charged it up and everything is A-OK. So at least the rechargeable battery with DC port theory works. Truth is, I think Brads wiring diagram is the exact thing we need, just swap the 9V for the ps3 battery and have an extra set of wires running to the female DC port to recharge them in the back like the RD. I'd go ahead with it myself but I'm just not sure about the whole voltage/MAH/amps thing haha. I'm just not sure a 3.7 can power both EL panels and 12 LEDs properly. I'm sure there is enough power to last, I'm just not sure there is enough power to make em bright.

I don't think we can get the battery life nor the brightness we want with the 3.7v. I am pretty sure that we need at least 5v or more.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

I will have this answered in the next day or two, one thing I have thought about though, I really want to use the LEDs in the v2's to test this accurately enough. Brad do you have any photos of the previous wiring system or do you know what cable lead from the heel cup LEDs to the circuit board?

I could snip the cables and rewire to the current 3v setup so we know for sure

Oh wanted to share this earlier, not sure how big that inverter is but it's 5v, only one I have seen so far. http://bit.ly/12nuIS7
