Good to see others doing this mod. It is a shame the Chinese didn't use decent UV stabilized rubber.

Yeah the soles tend to be the first thing people mention when they see the shoes. That yellow is just so far away from the clean and clear blue of the RD's and the fact they are flat really lets them down.

Ordered some rit dye earlier, will see how that turns out.

Most likely will end up buying some of your custom soles Cavx, really like the full outrigger look.

I guess the current V2 soles are a heap better than the V1s which were not only concave across the outrigger section, but didn't even have waffle. They had the reverse of waffle like little squares.

This Heel Cup mod is giving me grief right now. I am attempting to make it bulge more. You can see how I have reduced the look of the height of the back of the mid-sole buy reattaching it over the mid-sole. This actually frees up a little bit of space in the shoe and feels on the foot. The challenge is that sometimes the wires are attached to the base of this parts and it may tear on removal and I have had to layer up rubber to repair that. So probably not a mod to everyone. Maybe with a fresh cast part, it would not matter if you damaged the original part.

So I de-molded a cast a set of Heel Cups this morning, but they are too thick to simply stick over the top and blend in. I guess what I really need is the shape at about 2mm thick like a skin. I also found a way to make larger letters and will hopefully get a chance tonight to mix up some aqua and white rubber as well as some more grey.

Tonight I will coat over the NIKE and MAG letters and hopefully that gives me the slightly rounded look I am after.

As for the splatters, the rubber strings really fine as it comes progresses from liquid state to gel state. Regardless if I use the rubber of just paint, I do think I am best to bag and tape up the shoes and do the tooth brush flick method and call it a day.

Man, its crazy how close you've got yours looking to the originals here. Nice!

Yeah this seems like the easiest way to do it to make sure you get the right kind of splatter look.

That is my goal :)

Yeah this seems like the easiest way to do it to make sure you get the right kind of splatter look.

The rubber is also easier to remove if you make a mistake. There is a small window of time when you can peel it off after it sets.
I mixed the pigment tonight. I hope it is right. It look close by eye to aqua.

It seems 20min is the magic number for how long to wait to get this rubber into a ply-able consistency. It will still self level but does run like the former liquid version of itself, so it seems I have been able to build it up over the MAG letters to make the heel cup more rounded.
I will go and check it now as it has been about 2 hours since I applied it. Hopefully it has worked out this time.

It's best to see the comparison but aren't you making yours look like the shoes do now instead of 30 years ago?

These pictures are perfect. Thank you. My goal is to have MAGs that look like the movie shoe.

The 2011 MAG should be as close a replica to those shoes as possible. To do what I ultimately want to achieve would be to tear these down and sculpt new parts, but no need for a reminder about what happened last time I did that. So I am doing what I can whilst keeping the shoes still wearable.

For those of you who were curious about glow-in-the-dark things, this is the BTTF Air Max 90s glowing next to a logo strap done by Cavx. The shoe and strap logo were sitting in the sun for equal amounts of time, (a few hours because I forgot about it lol) so the Air Max 90's are never going to get any brighter. Now you can really see why I was so disappointed in their glowing. Mixing some GITD powder into the elastomer seems to work much better than just painting glow in the dark onto something. I did try putting both the V2 'glowing' strap and the strap logo from Cavx under a lamp last night but when I took the photo it didn't even show the V2 strap at all even though I could see it glowing very faintly. This will be a much easier mod than lighting the strap. :)

Wow! That's so bright, especially in comparison with the shoes.

Speaking of straps, I don't suppose anyone knows a way of just buying more straps on their own? mine are looking a little ragged after I had to change the EL in them. I could probably fix them up, just wondering if anyone has managed to just get straps from any of the sellers?

Nice photo DragonGalvy :) WOW they are bright compared to factory GITD. I will have to make up more and offer them on the JY.

Heel Cup update:

Thanks to Jedifyfe for posting those awesome photos of his RDs for me. From those, I was able to create a profile plate out of some thin plastic.

I then attacked the Heel Cups with the dremmil re-shaping them to be a closer match to the RD heel cup. They both match thanks to the profile card.

So the next step is to re-layer more grey rubber to blend them into the rest of the soles and build up where I have cut into the original dark grey rubber.

And now my shoes have both the thinner base on the mid-sole and that "fat ass" look on the Heel Cup.

The side profile probably shows it best. I had to grind a heep off right were the NIKE was to get that part flatter. I also had to gouge into the join to undercut enough for me to round the bottom to get that "fat ass" look.

Don't worry, I took molds of the letters before grinding them off so I can make myself some new ones. I think they also need to be slight lower than they are on the V2, so I will be able to move them down a bit when I am ready to attach them.

cavx do you think this could be done to a stock heel or how much curve is due to the rubber you added on?

I've basically built mine up about 1.5~2mm now. Thicker than the letters on the heel cup anyway.

The shape changed when I removed it from the inside mount to the outside. It gave me about 1/4" more room inside the shoe which is PERFECT now, but it flattened the shape of the cup on the outside and I wanted to get that nice round shape back. This has been an interesting mod for sure, but hopefully I am nearing the end so I can find something else to do to these shoes :p

cavx I was feeling crazy so I tried it my heels don't look as rd as yours do since the hc heels are different from the v2 but they look a hell of a lot closer I think I'm really happy with how it came out and I think this is as close as I'll get on the hcs without casting a new part

glasses, Every mod makes these look better.

So when I did mine, I also popped my heel cups out of their factory slot and glued them onto the outside of the mid-sole. The left heel cup tore a bit but I've since been able to repair that. This process stretches the cup a bit to make it longer or taller but less round. It also pulls the upper more upright losing some of that MP forward slope the shoes originally had. I then used the grey rubber to build it up so I could shape it. Does that make sense?

Is that just Dremeled and then painted?

I love that people are getting creative with their mods again instead of just doing the standard things. Always nice to get some variety and creativity in the mix.

This looks good. Tell me (us) what you have used?

I've just spent the last hour and half applying a fresh coat of rubber to blend it in better with the rest of the soles. They'll be fully cured in about 5 hours. I'll probably mask them up and splat them tomorrow. Then I'll re-do the branding.

@cavx I shaped it with my dremmel I used a few different sanding bits to get the tighter curve at the bottom once I got the shape I wanted I used a sanding sponge (Idk what it's called?? It's like a sponge coated in sandpaper? Yeah lol) to blend everything nice then I painted it and did the splat I'll post better pictures whenever my internet comes back on it's out right now and I've been posting on my phones 3G but I went for more of a movie look more smaller splat pattern then the stringy look we've all done I think it came out good and I really can't wait to put my decals on this new heel
