NIKE MAG Knockoffs

If you do make this pepakura file, could you link it to us here? It wouldn't matter about what scale you set it to because we can always edit that after we download it. I've been using pepakura for about 4 years. I'm actually going to start a portal gun with the program this weekend.

That looks very neat, though slightly over sized(?). Maybe the colour makes an optical illusion. What size are your shoes?

I have been reading up on PEPAKURA and learned that you can design complex parts like this in Sketch-Up (which I am becoming proficient at) so allowing me re-model my version (1st attempt didn't have the bubble in the back) to look closer to the part as well as allowing me to plan the compartment for the power supply.

Yeah, my shoes are US Size 12.

I think the clay is still too thick, so im going to try and reduce it, i'll have to slice it from the back bit very carefully.

if someone can give the dimensions and measurements of the real mag buckle, that would be helpful i think.

OK. Can I post the Sketch Up file or do I actually need PEP to do a conversion. I don't PEP at this time and use Sketch Up because it is free and does a very good job for what it is.

Excuse my "stitching" of these piece as it seemed no matter how many times I drew and re-drew, so parts would not go solid, so cross stitching was the only way to get the solid look, or parts would have been a wire frame. This is my 3rd attempt at this part and last night I decided to do something a little different and here is the result. There is still more work I could do to this part, but it it s start anyway.

Size 12? That looks the same scale as my wife's size 8s with my over sized buckle. I think some scaling down would not hurt.

great job. how long did it take you to model that? looks great, the shape is spot on.

:thumbsup Thanks for the positive feedback :)

It took ages, probably 50 hours for all three versions to get to where it is today. Give me a few days and I will add some small radius to round out the work :$ It also helps with the fact I have physically made a few parts as well.

Cavx, would you like that unfolded for Pepakura? If so I can take a crack at it if you would like.

Sure. I know there have been a few that would be interested in a PEP file of this part. I guess you will need the Sketch Up file? PM me with an email address and I will send you the file.

ok, once i have a final version and want to make a mold in silicone.

once thats done, what would be the best material to use to cast this ankle strap piece in?

i know you can get some rubbers and plastics, just not sure which would be a good one.

a hard plastic like the current kmags one or a liquid rubber material?

never done any mold making or casting before, so this should be fun!

still working on the ankle piece, need to improve it in many areas.

As far as I know (unless someone in the know would like to step in and correct me) RTV silicone for the mold and a hard setting poly urethane for the actual part. You can add dye to make it white so no need to paint.

Convert it to pepakura so we can make it in real life and build off of that. And pepakura is free and only takes like 1 minute to set up, so there's no hassle. And when you convert it try not to make it have so many folds. From what I see that would take an eternity just folding that thing. It doesn't have to be that round. People could just put bondo or other fillers over it to do that. That would really make so there is less folds and make the build much simpler.

A pepakura toe cap would be helpful too, but you don't have to do that since you're already doing so much.

I have to do one part at a time, so lets add the toe box on the to do list :)

I made a start the heel cup this morning. This part is difficult.

If anyone has successfully removed their sole inserts and can scan the part flat and would care to post an image of that, please feel free to do so.
I made a start on the clear sole, but have put it in the too hard basket for now. I would like to have another go at doing this. You can see what I have done HERE.

I wish you said something a few days ago, after removing one of them, I cut it up to make a template.

It's worth noting that one side doesn't lay quite flat, but a slab would still fit in place of it.

I can always try to scan the pieces and photoshop them together, BUT based on the markings on the inside I think these are each scaled to fit the different sizes, so you may need to pull off your own inserts to create new inserts for your Mags.

Timing really is everything. Oh well, I am sure someone else will do the heat gun thing soon. I hope.

That was what I was finding too and think that could work to our advantage. The screen shoes and 2011 release both have the clear part extending or at least vertical and not contoured under the shoe like these soles are. I am hoping that folding of the urethane will mimic this shape.

That kind of surgery is something I am hoping to avoid here. I mean , what is the worst that can happen? The purchase of a new pair of shoes?

Anyway, 1 step closer with the heel cup.

Feed back please.

The reason I have given you guys a 'side view' is that you should be able to right click the image and "save as", then open in Paint and draw on the grid if you think the profile needs re-shaping. Post it here and I can then redraw these mods in 3D and then get it converted to a PEP. In the mean time, I will continue working on the inside to make it an actual 3D part.

I've been doing some painting job on my K-Mags today:

NikeMagConversion.jpg

Only the toe section is photoshopped to look like the real Mags (I really hate this on the Mag knockoff)

Silver color on the shoe is too dark, my local store had only this matte grey but I decided to try it. They're all Tamiya products, airspray for the main section and acrylic for the sole. It's not accurate at all but makes a big difference for me, this is better than the white out of the box shoes. Finally I've made the blue spots with a marker. I guess painting will crack and go when wearing them but I'll order another pair in white to wear them if sbshoes V2 are not finally made. This pair I have painted will be a display prop only :)

Great looking shoes. I'm gonna try and see if I can get some of that paint for my Silver K-Mags. Only thing is I really want mine to be wearable.

You need paint that is flexible and designed for PVC and vinyl. I found such a product, but the supplier is giving me the run around by not supplying me with a local resellers details.
